The first episode of DC Universe's Harley Quinn animated series, which premiered on November 29, 2019, is now available to watch online for free. Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Harley Quinn first appeared on screen in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, voiced by Arleen Sorkin. She jumped into DC Comics proper in 1993, with her first appearance in The Batman Adventures #12. Her first live-action portrayal was in 2002's Birds of Prey television series, played by Mia Sara, and her first feature film live-action portrayal was in 2016's Suicide Squad, played by Margot Robbie. Robbie will reprise the role in both 2020's Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and 2021's James Gunn-directed quasi-reboot The Suicide Squad.
In DC Universe's adult animated series Harley Quinn, Kaley Cuoco voices the lead character, supported by a cast which includes Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Jim Rash as the Riddler, and Giancarlo Esposito as Lex Luthor. The show follows Harley Quinn's adventures with Poison Ivy and the Legion of Doom after leaving her abusive ex-boyfriend, the Joker. The first season is set to have 13 episodes, premiering weekly on DC Universe. The series is written and produced by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey.
DC's official account on YouTube has made the first episode of Harley Quinn available to watch for free. The show (embedded below) deals with the abusive nature of Harley Quinn's relationship with the Joker, and how she learns to be her own person outside of that. Quinn and Poison Ivy's relationship is a central focus of the show, one which is a favorite among fans of the characters. As an adult show, there is heavy language and violence, along with mature and topical themes. The series premiere is titled "Til Death Do Us Part," and has been well-received by critics.
Along with YouTube, the first episode of Harley Quinn also aired on TBS on December 8th as part of their "DCember" event. This is the first time a DC Universe show has aired outside of the streaming service. The upcoming series Stargirl will be airing weekly on DC Universe as well as on The CW, with new episodes coming out on the channel the day after they appear on the streaming service. Harley Quinn joins Titans and Doom Patrol as one of DC Universe's first original series.
The choice to stream the first episode of Harley Quinn on DC's YouTube channel makes sense, allowing people to hopefully watch enough of the show that they'll want to buy into the program. Along with the episode airing on TBS, this outreach technique is new one for DC Universe shows. Seeing as Stargirl will be airing on the streaming service and television simultaneously, it will be interesting to see what they decide to do with other shows in the future. With Harley Quinn being distinctly targeted towards adult audiences, giving it the freedom to explore darker humor, DC Universe (and Harley fans) are hopeful the new animated series will be a hit.
