With the long-awaited release of Halo: Reach on PC, there are going to be players completely new to the Halo franchise. Halo: Reach isn't the most traditional FPS currently on the market, so it can be pretty challenging at first, especially going up against veterans of original release from nearly 10 years ago.
There are many weapons and weapon combos that players can choose from in Halo: Reach. This guide will explain the best ones to use in multiplayer to get an advantage on the battlefield.
DMR
Like the pistol from Halo 1 (the M6D Magnum Sidearm) and the Battle Rifle from Halo 2 and 3, the DMR (the M392 Designated Marksman Rifle) is the flagship weapon of Halo: Reach. The gun shoots slowly but is very accurate, effective at any range from close encounters to cross-map fights. The DMR will always kill a shieldless target with a headshot, and can take only 5 shots to kill a fully shielded enemy. This is the gun most players will be using in multiplayer game modes, and players who cannot use it effectively will be at a disadvantage.
Plasma Pistol
This Covenant weapon might be surprising for some people to see on this list, but in the right hands it can be very strong. The Plasma Pistol (Type-25 Directed Energy Pistol) can't kill effectively on its own, but it can melt shields incredibly fast. Paired with high damage gun, like the DMR or Assault Rifle, Halo: Reach players have a powerful combo to kill players quickly.
M90 CAWS Shotgun
While Halo: Reach gunfights are generally played at mid to long range, the M90 Shotgun is the king of close quarter duels. This weapon can eliminate other players in one hit if they're close enough, and with enough practice and reaction time, players can even kill an enemy lunging with an energy sword without dying.
M319 Grenade Launcher
This is another misunderstood gun on this list. Halo: Reach's Rocket Launcher is usually the explosive weapon most players prefer to use, but the Grenade Launcher's versatility is something that shouldn't be underestimated. The standard Grenade Launcher shot bounces off walls and can hit players from a multitude of angles that they'd never expect. The bounces make it a strong offensive option against defensive teams in certain game modes, such as Capture the Flag or King of the Hill. It also fires grenades that can be remotely detonated which means it can serve as a solid defensive tool as well, with the ability to hold important areas of the map.
Sniper Rifle
Throughout the history of Halo, Sniper Rifles have always been popular because they are incredibly strong weapons. If you're accurate, they can kill other players with one headshot from anywhere on the map. The Sniper Rifle in Halo: Reach (the Sniper Rifle System 99 Anti-Matériel) is about the same. There aren't many weapons that can compete with this Sniper Rifle in long range combat, and with fast reactions and accurate aiming, players can even net kills in close quarter combat.
- Plasma Pistol + DMR: The Plasma Pistol knocks out shields really quickly with its fast rate of fire, and then the DMR can be used to kill a shieldless enemy with one headshot
- Shotgun + Sniper Rifle: Use the Sniper Rifle at medium to long range and switch to the Shotgun when enemies get too close
- Shotgun + DMR: Similar to the Shotgun + Sniper Rifle combo, this weapon pairing sacrifices its long range prowess to excel in midrange combat
- Grenade Launcher + DMR: The Grenade Launcher is powerful, but it can't be used for every scenario. Switch to the DMR during those situations
- Sniper Rifle + DMR: Like the Plasma Pistol + DMR combo, a bodyshot from the Sniper Rifle will make enemy shields disappear, and then the DMR will clean them up
- DMR: Just the DMR. It's that good.
Halo: Reach is available as part of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC and Xbox One.
