Steve Harvey is being severely criticized for a "cartel" monologue joke against Miss Colombia while hosting the Miss Universe pagent. The comedian missed the mark when he thought making fun of a country’s low points would earn him brownie points from the judges. Instead, the host came across as insensitive and disrespectful to the millions of viewers watching on their TVs, calling for an immediate apology to those he offended.
It seems that Harvey cannot catch a break when it comes to hosting the Miss Universe pageant. Only four years ago the talk show host mixed up the winners of the pageant when he went to announce the name and announced the wrong one. Now the comedian has landed on the front page again after making a series of jokes that viewers did not find at all funny.
According to People, the first joke occurred during the opening monologue where he initially joked about the drug cartels. He then made the fatal mistake of bringing up the joke once again while interviewing Miss Columbia, Gabriela Tafur during the first round. Harvey was speaking with the beauty queen while also telling her that she had successfully made it into the Top 20 when he yet again commented on how he accidentally announced that Miss Columbia had won the pageant in 2015 when in reality the true winner was Miss Philippines. Graciously, Tafur said she had forgiven the game show host to which Harvey then joked, "You forgive me. Yeah, they haven’t, not the cartel."
Much like wildfire, the comment quickly spread and caused severe backlash for the 62-year-old funny man. Many found Harvey’s generalization of one country disgraceful while others took to the defense of Columbia saying not all citizens are drug lords. Many viewers called out Harvey for sounding ignorant with some social media users blasting him telling him to open up a book every once in a while.
Many are calling for Harvey to step down from hosting as he also had a mix up while reading the teleprompter. While reading the machine he referred to Miss Malaysia as Miss Philippines while trying to announce the National Costume Contest winner. The beauty queen had to take the microphone from Harvey and tell the judges that she was, in fact, Miss Malaysia and not Miss Philippines. It's safe to say that the comedian is not laughing after the fall out of his subpar hosting and will most likely not be welcomed back next year to host Miss Universe.
