The Flash & GODSPEED Will Get Their Rematch in 2020 | Screen Rant

In Joshua Williamson's excellent Rebirth run of The Flash, a number of interesting new speedsters, both good and bad, have been introduced. A handful of people have been gifted speed powers in Central City for good, but the most chilling villain is undoubtedly Godspeed. And his story ain't over yet.

Godspeed first debuted in The Flash Rebirth #1, before making his first full appearance in The Flash #3. His real name, as the die-hard fans now know, is August Heart -- a colleague of Barry Allen's on the Central City Police Department, with an origin story tied directly to Flash's. August's brother was killed, and the evidence wiped away following lightning striking Barry Allen's office. So when August was later granted speed powers... he used them to become a vengeful god of the Speed Force. Which spells trouble, now that he's returning in 2020.

As a speedster, Godspeed proved to be a complex character depending on how you viewed him: as a villain, or an anti-hero. Since speedsters can make a habit of being two places at once, he managed to work solving his brother's murder as a speedster with Barry, but took the matter into his own hands as the costumed Godspeed. Williamson has now unveiled that Godspeed is returning to the series in March 2020, in The Flash #752.

For those wondering why a book currently on issue #84 would jump to issue #752, The Flash, along with Wonder Woman, will be returning to legacy numbering next year. So, the book is the same continuing Williamson arc, just with a new number system. The Flash's legacy numbering will begin with The Flash #750 on February 26th.

Godspeed has enormous power for a speedster, however, the more he used his powers the weaker he physically became. August kills more of his brother's murder suspects and intends on killing Barry's enemies at Iron Heights. Before he can finish the job, Godspeed is taken down and sent to prison himself. While in prison, he aides the Flash and begs for Barry's forgiveness. Godspeed's last full appearance (that's not a cameo or flashback) came in The Flash #45, where he escapes prison and is promised by a mysterious figure he can be a hero... and solve his brother's murder.

So the question remains: What has Godspeed been up this entire time? Which of his villainous or heroic persona will be leaned into more? Good or bad, it's great to see Godspeed return. He was a welcome addition to The Flash's canon when he was introduced and remains as such.
