10 Shows To Watch If You Love Dear White People | ScreenRant

Airing since 2017, Dear White People is a Netflix original series based on the 2014 movie of the same name. The show follows students of color through their typical college drama. Samantha is the protagonist, and she owns a radio show after which the series is called, where she addresses political and social issues that she is fed up with seeing around the university campus. Labeled as a 'woke' show, Dear White People enlightens its audience on examples of everyday racism, especially around young adults, that need to be changed.

Emotional and funny, the show is captivating for its dry humor, its stunning visuals, and its relatable characters. Yet despite all the internet praise, the show has yet to be renewed for season 4. So, in case the series comes to an end, here are 10 shows to watch if you love Dear White People.

10 The Good Place

The Good Place isn't your typical sitcom. Kristen Bell plays Eleanor, a deceased American woman who finds herself in the "Good Place." The eternal peace of this heaven-like place is immediately disrupted, however, as Eleanor realizes that she's not supposed to be in there since she was anything but a good person during her time on Earth.

Although the show is built around the fascinating concept of a dysfunctional afterlife as opposed to Dear White People's more realistic story, viewers will find similarities in the diversity of the cast and the jokes and the aesthetically pleasing visuals.

9 Sex Education

Sex Education is a Netflix British comedy show about Otis, an awkward 16-year-old whose mother is a sex therapist. He ends up helping other high school students with their sex lives in exchange for money. Although focused on Otis, each episode is dedicated to a different character's sexual problems, from the bully who takes too much viagra to the virgin girl who fantasizes about aliens.

While these issues are exaggerated for comic effect, they are nonetheless common teenage problems that teen shows and movies too often disregard. If your favorite part of Dear White People is the funny moments revolving around sex and love, then this show should be next on your watchlist.

8 Orange Is The New Black

With its final season released earlier this year, Orange Is The New Black is one of Netflix's most popular original shows. The series presents the lives of female prisoners, played by actors such as Taylor Schilling, Laura Prepon and Laverne Cox, who are all just as fascinating as their characters.

Although a women's prison is a considerably darker setting than an American university campus, the show tackles similar issues as Dear White People, with similarly dry humor as well. Not only that, but the show attacks homophobia, xenophobia, and is carried by powerful female characters like Dear White People's Samantha.

7 Easy

Easy is another Netflix original dramatic series running since 2016 that explores the, ironically, difficult lives of various characters living in Chicago. The list of well-known actors is long for this one. You will be glad to find not just Orlando Bloom, Dave Franco, and Elizabeth Reaser, but also actors from amazing TV shows like Jake Johnson (New Girl), Michael Chernus (Orange Is The New Black) and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta).

Unlike these other series, however, Easy is an anthology, meaning each episode tells a separate story. This makes episodes easy to watch and avoids the cliffhangers that usually keep us up watching a show all night long. That is not to say that the show is not nonetheless binge-able.

6 Black-ish

Started in 2014 and still running today with 6 seasons so far, Black-ish is a critically acclaimed sitcom about the jumbled and hilarious lives of a typical middle-class African American family. The show is pure comedy: whereas Dear White People calls out stereotypes of or discrimination against black people through the character openly debating these issues, Black-ish does the same entirely through dark jokes.

If you love comic-reliefs like D'unte or awkward characters like Lionel, you will find that the protagonists of Black-ish are the perfect entertainment for you.

5 Skam

Skam is a Norwegian drama series which aired from 2015 to 2017. The concept of the show is five girlfriends surviving the typical European high school experience. They deal with teenage problems such as jealousy, body image, bad reputations, and even mental illness. While funny, the show is more focused on making the characters and storylines realistic and relatable for young audiences.

If you like the idea of strong friendships surviving any drama, that's what the message of Skam is. Although not as political as Dear White People, the series still touches on issues like same-sex relationships, islamophobia, and sexual harassment.

4 Euphoria

It is likely that you have already seen HBO's newest sensation, Euphoria, a show that is almost as graphic and provocative as Game of Thrones. Zendaya steals the show as the narrator, Rue, a bipolar teenager recovering from drug addiction. All the other characters deal with similar struggles and get tangled up in dangerous stories of cheating, catfishing, and blackmail.

The show has a similar structure to Dear White People, where each episode focuses on a different character and makes use of beautiful images to tell its story. If you loved Dear White People's take on today's youth, you will love how Euphoria captures the role of love, sex, drugs, and family in a teenager's life.

3 She's Gotta Have It

Spike Lee's iconic 1986 film She's Gotta Have It was revisited in 2017 and turned into the Netflix series of the same name. The protagonist, Nola, is a struggling artist living in New York who finds herself torn between three vastly different men. One is a photographer and artist like herself, the second is a married man and a father, and the last one is a simple, free-spirited basketball fanatic.

If you're looking for a show that focuses on sexuality and relationships even more than Dear White People does, then She's Gotta Have It is the show to go for.

2 The Get Down

It's back to the '70s with the Netflix music drama The Get Down. Set in the middle of the rise of disco and hip hop in New York, the show follows a group of young adults from the Bronx who try to kickstart their respective careers in music or art.

The Get Down is just irresistibly good. It's only 1 season long and even has Jaden Smith making regular appearances. And just like Dear White People, the series is full of exciting hip hop music to make you discover plenty of new artists.

1 Atlanta

Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, created, writes, directs and stars in Atlanta, a series that merges satire and surrealism like never before. In Atlanta, Earnest takes on a new job as his cousin rapper's manager, while trying to provide for his baby daughter and deal with his romantic relationship. With season 3 on the way, the show continues to take its audiences by surprise with wild episodes including parodies of interviews and a deranged Michael Jackson-like character.

The show is similar to Dear White People in that it uses dark humor to reflect the dark reality of racism in America. For fans of Dear White People, this is the perfect show to find similarly intelligent and realistic characters with important real-life issues.
