Thor Referenced The Avengers' Shawarma Scene In Endgame

In Avengers: Endgame, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) talked about the shawarma scene, which was The Avengers' iconic post-credit scene. After their devastating loss to Thanos (Josh Brolin) five years prior in Avengers: Infinity War, the MCU heroes get another crack at the Mad Titan thanks to the idea of the Time Heist from Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). This results in the Avengers revisiting moments in the franchise's history to collect all six Infinity Stones for their own gauntlet. That included the Battle of New York in 2012 where there were three Infinity Stones in the Big Apple at that time.

Crashing back to Earth following his near-death experience hauling a nuclear bomb into the Chitauris' ship in The Avengers, Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.) asked his superhero allies for a post-mission meal. Once Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) arrest had been settled, the team eventually went to a shawarma joint as seen in the film's stinger, which remains one of the MCU's most iconic post-credit scenes. The Joss Whedon movie didn't show everything that happened between Tony's crash landing and the gang's meal, but thanks to Endgame, we learned additional details on how they dealt with the aftermath of the God of Mischief's failed invasion attempt.

In Endgame, Tony and Scott plan to distract their 2012 counterparts by giving the younger a Tony "a mild cardiac dysrhythmia" by interfering with the arc reactor near Tony's heart. As the 2012 Avengers make their way out of Stark Tower, they are confronted by Secretary Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) who asks about their plans for the captured Loki and the Space Stone. Though Endgame's the action centers on Ant-Man's quest to cause Tony's heart attack, the overheard dialogue references the shawarma scene.

Pierce asks them where they're heading with the Space Stone, amd Thor calmly replies, "A bit of lunch then Asgard." The "bit of lunch" is an unmistakable reference to the shawarma joint visit shown at the end of The Avengers, while Asgard is where Loki would be imprisoned and the Space Stone would be stored. After that, there is a scuffle with Pierce insisting that he has the authority over Tesseract and Loki, though Thor insists that his brother will answer to Asgard first. Simultaneously, 2012 Tony gets the mini heart attack care of Scott in collaboration with his future self.

While the MCU is known for playing the long game (albeit some key retcons), sneaking seemingly unimportant details in their films reminds audiences of the careful world-building involved by the Marvel Studios' creative team. In particular, the shawarma scene was a last minute addition to The Avengers; in fact, the stinger wasn't even on its theatrical cut during its premiere screening. The cast shotgun-filmed it while they were already in the middle of the movie's press tour at a local shawarma place about three blocks away from the team's hotel.

As the culminating movie of MCU's first three Phases, Avengers: Endgame had its work cut out it to be a well-received conclusion to the Infinity Saga. Fortunately, the filmmakers were able to find a way to stick the landing thanks to a mix of epic storytelling and satisfying swan song to some of the franchise's most beloved heroes. However, the string of references Avengers: Endgame had to previous films also played a big part in what made it such a beloved finale as it evoked nostalgia for fans who have been with these characters for so long.
