Star Wars: R2-D2 & C-3PO's 10 Best Scenes, Ranked | ScreenRant

From the very first scene in the very first Star Wars movie – in release order, not in chronological order – R2-D2 and C-3PO made for one of the franchise’s most beloved duos. Threepio is fluent in hundreds of languages, whereas Artoo speaks in beeps and whirs. Even from a conceptual standpoint, they’re hilariously mismatched.

Threepio is constantly paranoid, while Artoo is always pretty lax. The two have been bickering on the big screen ever since Princess Leia sent them to Tatooine to deliver a message to Ben Kenobi. So, here are R2-D2 and C-3PO’s 10 best scenes from the Star Wars saga, ranked.

10 THEIR FIRST MEETING

It felt like an unnecessary moment of fan service to reveal that C-3PO was designed by Anakin in The Phantom Menace. There is enough connective tissue between the original and prequel trilogies as it is; weirdly explaining that Darth Vader built C-3PO just felt like overkill.

Having said that, it did pave the way for a heartfelt on-screen meeting between C-3PO and R2-D2. Qui-Gon brings Artoo to Anakin’s house, and he and Threepio hit it off immediately.

9 ARTOO GIVES THREEPIO HIS MEMORIES BACK

In The Rise of Skywalker, C-3PO has his memory bank wiped in order to read the Sith language that will lead them to Palpatine’s hideout. However, as it turns out, R2-D2 has a backup of all his friend’s memories, so he’s able to just reload them into his head when he returns to the Resistance’s base of operations.

Threepio may have only lost his memories to bait Star Wars fans with the character’s supposed death in the trailers, but it gave this duo a fun moment in the movie – something the sequel trilogy seriously lacked.

8 KEEPING THE REBELS SAFE FROM THE EWOKS

When Chewbacca chases down some hanging meat on the forest moon of Endor, he gets all the Rebels trapped in one of the Ewoks’ traps. They get strung up in a net, and then R2-D2 frees them all with a little buzzsaw gadget he’s been hiding in his chest.

Then, when the Ewoks show up, C-3PO keeps the Rebels safe as the furry critters worship the shiny protocol droid as a god.

7 SPLITTING UP IN THE TATOOINE DESERT

After their escape pod crashes into the Tatooine desert, Threepio and Artoo start walking past the large skeletons and charred remains in search of civilization. Along the way, they disagree on the direction that they need to go in.

This leads to a big tiff where they end up going their separate ways. Later, they both encounter a Sandcrawler and are reunited when they’re both stolen by the same bunch of Jawas.

6 ARTOO PUTS THREEPIO BACK TOGETHER

Midway through Attack of the Clones, Artoo and Threepio find themselves in a Separatist factory that’s pumping out battle droids. Threepio ends up on the production line, with his head being planted on the body of a battle droid and a battle droid head being planted on his own body.

He’s shipped off to fight in the epic battle between the Jedi (and later the Republic’s Clone Army) and the Separatists. Following the battle, Artoo uses his grappling hook to put his protocol droid pal back together.

5 SAVING THE HEROES FROM THE TRASH COMPACTOR

When Luke, Han, Leia, and Chewie all get stuck in the Death Star’s trash compactor and the walls start closing in, they desperately try to get in touch with R2-D2 and C-3PO to save them. Until the very last second, the droids miss the transmission.

Eventually, Threepio sees that they’re in distress and gets Artoo to hack into the main console and switch off the trash compactor, saving the heroes right before they got squished into four pancakes.

4 INFILTRATING JABBA’S PALACE

At the beginning of Return of the Jedi, Luke sends C-3PO and R2-D2 to Jabba the Hutt’s palace with a message, as part of a larger plan to save Han from his carbonite freezing.

Threepio is terrified to be entering the sordid lair of a local crime lord, while Artoo just wants to get in, deliver the message, and get out. Of course, neither of them get to leave and they remain Jabba’s prisoners until Luke shows up to save them.

3 THREEPIO CONVINCES UNCLE OWEN TO BUY ARTOO

When Artoo and Threepio were sent down to Tatooine, they got separated and then reunited when they were abducted by the same scrap-gathering group of Jawas. Uncle Owen bought Threepio and an R2 unit, but when that R2 unit turned out to have a bad motivator, Threepio suggested his old astromech friend for the job: “Excuse me, sir, but that R2 unit is in prime condition. A real bargain.”

It was sweet to see Threepio sticking his neck out for Artoo, to prevent them from being separated. After Owen bought Artoo, Threepio told him, “I’m quite sure you’ll be very pleased with that one, sir. He really is in first-class condition. I’ve worked with him before.”

2 “YOU DON’T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE HYPERDRIVE.”

At the end of The Empire Strikes Back, when Lando joins Leia, Chewie, and the droids on the Millennium Falcon, Artoo starts trying to fix the ship’s hyperdrive engine.

Even after Lando tells him the ship will be fine without the use of hyperdrive, and after Threepio tells him, “You don’t know how to fix the hyperdrive,” Artoo continues trying to fix it. One of R2-D2’s most prominent character traits is his bad attitude.

1 ESCAPING FROM TANTIVE IV IN AN ESCAPE POD

In the opening set piece of the original 1977 Star Wars movie, we see the shootout between the Rebels and the Stormtroopers through the eyes of R2-D2 and C-3PO. They desperately avoid blaster fire as they wander through the corridors of the ship.

Princess Leia records a message for Ben Kenobi onto Artoo’s hard drive and sends him into an escape pod with Threepio. Leia ended up getting captured by the Empire, but the droids escaped and the message was out there.
