10 Best Movies With Blind Protagonists, Ranked | ScreenRant

If you look back in time, blindness was often portrayed in media in the wrong light. A lot of comedy was involved without respect towards the blind characters and it presented a world that does not understand this disability at all.

Luckily all of this is in the past, and now writers are trying to introduce the visually impaired in a new light, without stereotyping and with increased value in the stories being told. Movies provide a strong case for that point, and through the years they've introduced us to blind people who are equally valuable to the plot, if not more so. Here are 10 of the best movies that feature blind protagonists.

10 Blind (2017)

Alec Baldwin doesn't appear in too many romance movies, but when he does, he holds his own quite well. In Blind, Baldwin takes the role of a blind man who was once an accomplished writer. His life is forever changed when an automobile accident kills his wife and takes away his sight.

As a teacher, his days then become filled with listening to essays read to him, and he is known for being bitter after his accident. This changes somewhat whenever Demi Moore's character reads for him to fulfill her community service, but he starts to fall head over heels in love with her. Demi's character is able to access his character's softer side and helps him come to terms with his newfound disability.

9 Proof (1991)

Many blind people often lack confidence and trust, but can you really blame them? This is beautifully explained in Proof through the main character, Martin, played by Hugo Weaver. Martin is a man who is visually impaired and distrusts everyone around him, while at the same time being extremely insecure. He gives people another chance by hiring Andy, a young waiter.

The waiter has to explain and describe photos for him, and while doing his job, he falls in love with Martin’s housekeeper. The housekeeper, Celia, on the other hand, flirts with both Martin and Andy consistently. Celia has her ways with both of them and her behavior makes the movie even more exciting in terms of uncertainty.

8 Daredevil (2003)

This movie has so many corny scenes, but we couldn't help but put it on this list. Ben Affleck stars in one of the cheesiest movies of the 2000s, but the drive behind the character commands respect.

While Matthew Murdock wasn't born blind, his loss of sight occurred when he was caught in the middle of a freak accident that resulted in radioactive material being splashed on his eyes. Created by Stan Lee, the character has become legendary for being one of the most badass comic book heroes that deals with a disability.

7 Blind Dating (2006)

This short romantic comedy will probably cheer you up more than you planned. The main character is quite pretty but unfortunately single and in search of a companion. He desperately wants to find a girlfriend for himself, so he goes on a bunch of dates that only end up as disasters.

He convinces his potential love interests that his blindness is not a big deal at all throughout the whole movie, but manages to find himself tied up in a lot of unnecessarily crazy situations. When he finally finds a woman and starts a serious relationship, things get even more out of control. Her family suddenly becomes involved and the chaos ensues.

6 Blindsight (2006)

Directed by Lucy Walker, Blindsight is a documentary about six blind Tibetan teenagers who are salient from their culture. It might be strange to see a documentary on this list, but the gripping story told here is entirely worthy of note. Their culture labels them as sinners and declares that they are possessed by demons. They find peace among themselves and their teacher and decide to climb Mount Everest with the help of Erik Weihenmayer.

The process is extremely difficult and makes them lose their minds for a moment during a particularly intense scene. Given that the subjects of this documentary are actually blind, it might seem like cheating, but the intimate and heartfelt ways in which the topic is explored absolutely bears mentioning.

5 Love And Honor (2007)

This story is about a low-ranking Japanese samurai named Kimura. He works as a food-taster, and one day finds himself poisoned himself from shellfish. The poisoning leaves him blind which results in him losing his career.

His wife starts to communicate with a suspicious official and questions begin to rise after her decisions. Is she unfaithful to her husband? Or she is just trying to help him? Critics praise this movie by saying that it represents the most realistic situations people who are blind face.

4 At First Sight (1999)

Surgeries can be very difficult to overcome, especially when the loss of one's sight is a prospect. The main character’s real story in this movie starts right after the moment he comes out of surgery.

The difficulties he faces are represented by daily events that many of us often take for granted. During his hardships, he manages to snag a love interest that helps him understand that he's still taking many things for granted.

3 The Eye (2002)

This infamous horror movie out of Hong Kong received a lot of applause because it told an unrealistic story through realistic situations. The movie is about Mun, a young and talented violinist who at the beginning is blind, but later starts seeing many ghastly apparitions in her daily life.

She somehow can see more than what normal people see, and things go horribly wrong from that moment on. The movie was so popular in its homeland that the U.S has its own version, starring Jessica Alba in the leading role.

2 Book Of Eli (2002)

The hero of the film, Eli, is a blind lone-wanderer with a hefty task; to rewrite the holy bible. The movie revolves around Eli's time wandering through a post-apocalyptic wasteland that is filled with lawless people.

Gary Oldman does an exceptional job acting as the antagonist in this movie, and we are left stunned at the abilities the blind Eli seems to possess. The most outstanding? His ability to recite the entire bible verbatim, using only his memory.

1 Julia's Eye's (2010)

This supernatural blockbuster comes all the way from Spain; it is another well-received horror, weaving an incredibly spine chilling and unpredictable narrative. In short, it is about a woman named Julia who is facing a complicated situation after her twin sister Sara dies.

She thinks that her sister’s death is very suspicious, and begins to investigate on her own before discovering more than she should.
