Can we find love in a lawless world? Sons of Anarchy was a series about an outlaw biker gang and their criminal activity. But that doesn't mean there was no time for romance. The "ride free or die" lifestyle is stressful to say the least, and it helps having a partner to come home to.
But it also begs the question of who exactly is willing to settle down with a violent criminal? As it turns out, some are totally cut out for the SAMCRO life. But others make us question what they're doing there at all.
10 No Sense: Jax & Wendy
These two were on the outs from the series premiere, and other than a shared physical attractiveness, we question why Jax and Wendy even got married in the first place. Upon getting sober, Wendy is right in thinking that she is a much better guardian for Abel than her criminal ex.
This of course leads to one of Jax's lowest, most evil moments in the series when he forcibly shoots Wendy up with drugs. Yet in the final season, mommy and daddy are getting along. Given the abuse Jax put Wendy through, it's more than a little disturbing that they end up making love, with Wendy dressed in white lingerie. We're not sure if there's any creepy angel symbolism, but we do know that the woman deserves better.
9 Perfect: Ratboy & Brooke
As compelling as the characters of Sons of Anarchy are, most of them are straight-up terrible people. That's what makes Ratboy and Brooke's relationship so refreshing. Sure, he's an outlaw but at his core, Ratboy has a pure heart, and Brooke fully reciprocates his affection.
Of course, Ratboy is young and impressionable. When he sees the atrocious way senior members of the club treat their "old ladies," he follows suit in his behavior toward Brooke. But thanks to mama bear Gemma, this doesn't last long. She recognizes Ratboy as one of the good ones, and gives him a verbal smack upside the head. That's all he needs to go right back to his sweet self. And in the outlaw world of Charming, sweetness is the ultimate rebellion.
8 No Sense: Chibs & Althea
This has to be the most shoehorned romance of the entire series. Throughout SoA's seven-season run, most of the SAMCRO members had either serious romances or a string of sexual encounters, but Chibs never really had anybody. Enter Lt. Althea Jarry.
Aside from these two having no chemistry whatsoever, one of the frequent criticisms of the show is how Charming law enforcement always rolls over for the Sons. It would make much more sense for Althea to want to clean the town's streets, not hop into bed with a biker outlaw.
7 Perfect: Gemma & Clay
We're treading lightly on this one. Obviously, the second Clay raised his hand to Gemma, they were no longer perfect together. But prior to this horrific incident, Gemma and Clay were the Lord and Lady Macbeth of Charming.
Both of them were ruthless schemers, determined to rule both SAMCRO and their quaint NoCal town. Clay was a much better match for Gemma than hubby number one, the idealistic John Teller. Need more proof? How about the fact that Gemma and Clay teamed up to kill John? Had these two power-hungry love birds stayed on the same page, who knows how many more heads would have rolled.
6 No Sense: Jax & Colette
Jax has mommy issues. And you can't really blame him — his mom is Gemma Teller, after all. Sure, she's a matriarch willing to literally cut someone for her loved ones. But whereas Jax got his dreamer gene from his daddy, his sociopathy is all Gemma.
So is that why he mixed business with pleasure and hooked up with the madame of Diosa? To work out his mommy issues? While this whole dynamic may be catnip to a psychologist, it just caused us to raise our eyebrows.
5 Perfect: Opie & Donna
Opie and Donna's marriage wasn't glamorous. It wasn't filled with a romantic chase scene or love confessions in the rain. Instead, their life was full of everyday stresses rarely given so much detail on our television screens: raising kids, struggling with bills, living the paycheck-to-paycheck life.
Yet never did we see a relationship on the show so full of love and loyalty, the latter of which was really Opie's tragic flaw. His loyalty to the club got him thrown in jail, resulting in his family's dire financial situation. The fact that he joined right back up with them is what put the nail in the coffin for Donna. Had she lived, we would have loved to see them skip town and go live the life of peace and quiet they deserved.
4 No Sense: Opie & Lyla
Lyla joins the very small camp of likable characters on the show. The adult film star-turned-director is one of the most down-to-earth Charming residents there is. In theory, this makes her a perfect match for Opie. There's just one problem: Lyla isn't Donna.
After Donna's death, Gemma steers Opie Lyla's way. She's a sweet, attractive woman to share his bed with, and together they would give their children another parent. But just because two people are equally kind and good-natured doesn't necessarily mean they belong together — especially with Donna's ghost haunting their doomed marriage.
3 Perfect: Gemma & Nero
No man could ever tame Gemma. Nor should they want to. But Nero's calm levelheadedness really helps smooth Gemma's rough edges, whereas Clay only sharpened them.
To be clear, Gemma and Nero's relationship was doomed from jump. As much as she may want the tranquil life he can provide, Gemma's outlaw blood runs thick. If it wasn't murdering Tara that did her in, it would have been something else — likely sooner rather than later.
2 No Sense: Jax & Tara
Fans may want us to meet Mr. Mayhem for saying this, but Jax and Tara had no business being together. Nobody's questioning the love they have for each other, but how plausible is their romance, really? At the beginning of the series, Tara made it perfectly clear she was done with the biker lifestyle. While we can see the old flame rekindling, in reality this should have lead to nothing more than a few steamy encounters.
Like Donna, Opie, and so many others before and after them, the SAMCRO life is what let to Tara's demise. The only problem is that someone as smart as her likely would have seen it coming and up and left Jax a long time ago.
1 Perfect: Tig & Venus
Throughout the show's run, Tig was often a comic relief character known for his violent temper and kinky sexual antics. But his relationship with Venus is anything but a joke; she is the only person Tig has ever allowed himself to be vulnerable with.
As a trans-woman, Venus fears that Tig is only with her for the "sexual deviance" factor, and that he's just playing out a phase of rebelling against the norm. But this couldn't be further from the truth. Really, Tig is afraid to rebel against his own self-imposed norm of never letting sex turn into romance. But in one of the most beautiful scenes of the entire series, Tig confesses his true feelings to Venus. He loves her, she loves him, and we love them.
