WandaVision: Kevin Feige Teases Sparky the Android Dog Appearance

One more Vision character might be appearing in Disney+’s MCU series WandaVison: Sparky the Android Dog. This robotic pup is a part of a “Synthezoid” family The Vision created in an increasing effort to become more human.  It's from his 2016 solo series by writer Tom King and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta, which is believed to serve as a primary inspiration for the upcoming show.

In the pages of this acclaimed run, Sparky was created from the brain patterns of a neighbor’s dead dog to serve as a pet for the troubled Visions (consisting of wife Virginia, daughter Viv, and son Vin) after the super villain Grim Reaper was killed during an attempted break-in of their suburban home and found buried in their backyard. As an android, the dog possesses a number of super-canine abilities, such as the ability to manipulate the density in his body to become intangible and the power of flight, both of which are powers shared by his creator, Vision.

According to CBR, Marvel Studios' head Kevin Feige teased Sparky’s appearance during his appearance at the CCXP Convention in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Feige commented on the 2016 comic run, saying, “There were some beautiful covers [by Mike Del Mundo] for that, with [Vision] in the suburbs which [provided] a lot of inspiration [for WandaVision]. If you know that comic, you might meet Sparky the Dog at a certain point in that series, but it’s only just inspired by that series and goes into a different direction.” There’s no word yet if the rest of Vision’s family will appear in the series, but given these comments, it’s a possibility.

Set to air on Disney+ in the spring of 2021 over the course of six episodes, WandaVision will feature Avengers power couple Wanda “The Scarlet Witch” Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany) living in a sort of 50s-esque suburban neighborhood, or at least that’s what it seems like on the surface. It has been hinted that this setting is actually a fantasy created by Wanda to cope with the loss of her beloved Vision during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, one of the few deaths in that film to not be undone by the Avengers’ actions in Avengers: Endgame.

If Sparky the Android Dog does show up in WandaVision down the road, it would be a good fit for the series given its premise. Wanda is trying to create an ideal sitcom-style household for herself and Vision to live in, which more often than not features a lovable pet to greet its owner as they come home from work. Wanda’s mind might bring forth images of, for example, Vision and his children playing catch with Sparky in the backyard while she drinks tea from the porch, a perfect sight of peace that she has long been denied during her time with the Avengers. It’s also possible that Sparky himself could be yet another resurrection; perhaps the dog is based on a pet Wanda and her brother Pietro (aka the late Quicksilver) had during their childhood in Sokovia, prior to the fateful bombings that rendered the two orphans. This would be a thought-provoking look into Wanda’s past and psyche and serves as interesting food for thought leading up to WandaVision’s release in two years.
