Lucifer star Tom Ellis feels bad he lied to fans about his role in the Arrowerse's Crisis On Infinite Earths crossover, but he has a good reason. Fans first began to hope Ellis might appear during the event as his character, Lucifer Morningstar, when news started to break about the many guest stars who would take part. However, it wasn't until October that viewers received concrete evidence about Ellis' role in Crisis On Infinite Earths. This came in the form of behind-the-scenes set pictures that showed him with Legends of Tomorrow's Matt Ryan (John Constantine), as well as Katherine McNamara (Mia Smoak) and David Ramsey (John Diggle) of Arrow.
Once the photos seemingly confirming his role made their way onto the internet, Ellis attempted to backpedal a Lucifer appearance, as it turns out, to preserve the surprise for fans. He explained, "I go to Vancouver for the weekend to visit my friend for his birthday and now suddenly I’m in a different show!” However, as Crisis On Infinite Earths fans now know after watching Part 3 last night, Ellis did in fact appear in a brief scene with Constantine, Mia, and Diggle. In it, they traveled to Lucifer's Earth (666, of course) and asked him about retrieving Oliver Queen's soul from Purgatory.
Ellis explained his fib about appearing in Crisis On Infinite Earths via a tweet after the episode aired, calling the lie "a mild attempt to put the genie back in the bottle." The co-showrunner of Lucifer, Joe Henderson, also weighed in, sharing that he was on hand to help with Ellis' cameo. He also passed along a fun behind-the-scenes photo of Ellis and Ryan. Check out both tweets, as well as the photo of Lucifer's appearance in Crisis On Infinite Earths, below:
Lucifer's appearance in Crisis On Infinite Earths is notable for being the first confirmation fans have received that the series is a part of the Arrowverse. The first three parts of the crossover have done the same for several DC TV shows and movies, usually by showing them taking place on a different Earth, as they did with Lucifer. For example, last night's episode opened with a Birds of Prey cameo by Huntress actress Ashley Scott, though unfortunately she was seen only briefly before her Earth disappeared. However, Birds of Prey's inclusion in the Arrowverse isn't quite as big of a surprise as Lucifer's because Birds of Prey aired on The CW precursor The WB, while Lucifer first aired on Fox before switching to Netflix.
Fans can't really be mad at Ellis for telling a little fib about his cameo in Crisis On Infinite Earths. His scene was one of the more fun ones to air during the crossover so far and provided a nice bit of comic relief during an otherwise serious event. If viewers had known for sure the moment was coming, it would have lessened the impact. Though some fans may be annoyed they were led astray by Ellis, they can't fault him for trying to give them the best Lucifer crossover experience possible.
