The Office: Every Main Character, Ranked By Intelligence

There are a lot of reasons to love The Office. The show is undeniably hilarious and is probably one of the best sitcoms in the history of television. However, after nine seasons it would be natural for the show to feel a little over the hill. Or at least that would be natural if the lovable and bizarre characters that populate the series weren't so perennially endearing.

The comedy of The Office was priceless, but the characters were truly the heart of the show. These completely unique freaks are what made The Office what it was, and honestly, it's hard to say if people wished they could live in a world with these kinds of weirdos or if they were just relieved that at least their real-life office wasn't this bad. But which characters were the dumbest, and which were the smartest? These are the characters from the series, ranked by intelligence.

10 Michael Scott

The Office is full of a lot of characters who are lacking in the intellect department, so it's hard to say who exactly is the dumbest of them all. However, Michael's stupidity certainly has the widest effect on everyone else around him, and we have more evidence of his stupidity than we do of anyone else's, so that is why he wins the dubious distinction of the dumbest in the office.

What makes Michael so dangerous and so idiotic is that in addition to being well and truly dumb, he is absolutely convinced that he is always the smartest person in the room.

9 Kevin Malone

For some ungodly reason, Kevin Malone works in the accounting department of Dunder Mifflin, so despite the fact that he seems to be so stupid that he can barely function, he can at the very least do basic math.

Perhaps Kevin's external demeanor is misleading because it seems pretty obvious that if Angela, a fellow member of the accounting team, could come up with a justifiable reason to get him fired, then he would have been fired ages ago. Ergo, Kevin must be capable enough to do his job, but it honestly doesn't seem like he's capable of doing much else. Or maybe he just plays dumb?!

8 Kelly Kapoor

Intelligence and stupidity are two things that are so broad that it's almost impossible to measure, but when it comes to the smart-stupid spectrum it seems like Kelly Kapoor is some kind of a general idiot and pop culture savant. Her encyclopedic knowledge of inane celebrity trivia is actually astounding, but she also seems like a person who barely even has thoughts.

If Kelly put her mind to it, she could probably be a genius in some kind of useful way, but she is devoted to her passions and devotes every ounce of her brain energy to that relatively useless passion.

7 Andy Bernard

Anyone who ever watched The Office knows that Andy Bernard went to Cornell, but he is just yet another example of how many truly idiotic people manage to get into good universities for god knows what reason (legacy preference maybe?). Andy is a relatively functional human being and isn't as dumb as his coworkers, but that's not much of a compliment.

Andy appears to at least be a better and more intelligent boss than Michael, but again, that's not much of a compliment. But Andy is literate, a college graduate, and beat out other people for his job, so that has to count for something.

6 Dwight Schrute

Dwight Schrute is very clearly a somewhat intelligent person, even if he decides to use that intelligence in some unusual and particularly unhelpful ways. When it comes to modern, everyday life, Dwight is ignorant of some of the most basic elements of culture and society.

However, if you were to throw him on a deserted island with nothing but the clothes on his back, he could probably give someone like Bear Grylls a run for his money. Or he at least has the knowledge base to give him a run for his money, even if he's not physically capable of doing pretty much anything.

5 Toby Flenderson

Toby may be one of the duller members of the Dunder Mifflin office, but in fairness to him, Michael's relentless hatred probably didn't give him much time to shine. However, despite his lacking personality, Toby does at least seem to be a reasonably competent and capable man with something to offer to the world.

When it comes to common sense, he's head and shoulders above the vast majority of the other people in the office, and he also seems to be pretty capable when it comes to functioning in normal society.

4 Oscar Martinez

Oscar Martinez appears to be one of the few normies in an office chock full of the weirdest weirdos on planet earth, but he seems to be a pretty clever guy who doesn't fit in with the Dunder Mifflin crowd in the best way possible.

He's also one of the few members of the office who has showed any interest in good literature or fine art, which puts him far and away ahead of most of The Office's characters when it comes to being cultured and informed. Really the only negative thing that can be said about Oscar is that he works for Dunder Mifflin.

3 Pam Beesly

Pam Beesly is one of those classic under-achievers who seems capable of a lot more than she actually does, and the only thing that seems to get in her way is herself and her own fears about failure.

Pam is funny and very quick on her feet, but what puts her ahead of many of her other more mediocre office-mates is that she also has some actual artistic interest and talent. Pam really sells herself short in every way possible, but every time she really tries to do something she seems to succeed with flying colors.

2 Jim Halpert

It's not surprising that Pam and Jim seem to be written in the stars because Jim Halpert is also someone who spent most of his life massively under-achieving even though he was blatantly capable of so much more.

Jim outshone his coworkers on a daily basis when he wasn't even trying to, and the fact that he was pretty much immediately successful when he branched out and put effort into things goes to show how talented he really was. With Athlead he succeeded at something in his first try when most people couldn't succeed at it, period.

1 Creed Bratton

Creed Bratton is an absolute enigma, and it's hard to say if that's by coincidence or by design. Probably a bit of both. Creed is easily one of the weirdest and most deranged people in the office, but his ability to exist in the world as the person he is denotes a level of intelligence that is unmatched by any other Office character.

Creed has clearly committed dozens of crimes throughout his life, whether it be identity theft of possibly even murder, but he has managed to always get away with and blend in (relatively speaking) with society nonetheless.
