Seinfeld: Every Main Character, Ranked By Funniness | ScreenRant

There are more places than ever before to watch TV now, from streaming services to new channels popping up all the time. But no matter how much the television landscape changes, one thing will remain the same: how hilarious the classic '90s sitcom Seinfeld is.

Jerry Seinfeld, George Costanza (Jason Alexander), Kramer (Michael Richards), and Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) are a perfect group of witty, sarcastic, and funny characters who are constantly annoyed by the situations that they find themselves in. But even though this show is consistently funny, no matter how many times fans watch each episode, who are the most hilarious characters? Here is every main character on Seinfeld, ranked by funniness.

10 Susan

The gang on Seinfeld doesn't end up in many long-term relationships, so it's a big surprise when George proposes to Susan. This character is his longest love interest, and since she's on the show for a while, she could be considered a main character.

Susan is definitely the least funny character on Seinfeld. It's hard to tell if she has ever cracked a joke in her life, let alone laughed at something that someone else has said. She's constantly bossing George around and becoming annoyed with him, and her deadpan and dull personality is a chore to watch.

9 Helen Seinfeld

Jerry's parents sometimes come to visit (and often spend their time trying to avoid the Costanzas), or he visits them in Florida, where Elaine hurt her back on the uncomfortable sofabed, the A/C is never turned on, and the neighbors are crazy.

Jerry's mom Helen (Liz Sheridan) takes the number 9 spot on this list. She isn't laugh-out-loud funny and, sure, we smile and nod along with whatever she says, but she's mostly an overprotective mother to Jerry and doesn't bring anything new to that type of character. The most hilarious thing she has ever said is "How can anyone not like you?" about Jerry.

8 Frank Costanza

Frank Costanza (Jerry Stiller) has his moments of humor, like when he tries to talk to George about bras, but he's mostly just an awkward character who doesn't get as many laughs as the rest of the gang.

George's dad is ranked number 8 on this list of the funniest characters on Seinfeld as he really doesn't hold a candle to his son, George, or any of the other characters.

7 Morty Seinfeld

Morty Seinfeld (Barney Martin) really shines in the season three episode "The Pen" when he gets upset that a neighbor thinks that Jerry stole his pen. When he believes in something, he really goes there, and that is always funny to watch.

Another great Morty moment is in the season four episode "The Wallet" when he can't believe that you have to wait so long at a doctor's office. He says, "They keep you in here a year. They don't give a damn. I could die in here. . . . Excuse me! Excuse me! What's going on? I'm here twenty minutes. Could somebody please help me." Then he thinks that the doctor took his wallet.

6 Newman

Newman (Wayne Knight) and Jerry can't stand each other, so whenever Newman has a hilarious scene, it's often because the two of them are talking and getting annoyed with one another.

Newman's most hilarious piece of dialogue is when he goes on a huge rant about the mail in the season four episode "The Old Man." He says, "Because the mail never stops. It just keeps coming and coming and coming. There's never a letup, it's relentless." This speech isn't as hilarious as anything that Jerry, George, or Elaine would say, but it's still pretty good.

5 Estelle Costanza

George's mom Estelle (Estelle Harris) is pretty much hysterical no matter what is going on, and she is a really funny character because of that.

She never stops screeching at her husband or son, and George's parents fight so much that it's hard to believe that they've managed to stay married for so many years.

Her funniest moment has got to be in the infamous season four episode "The Contest" when she catches George in an embarrassing position. She says, "I don't understand you. I really don't. You have nothing better to do at three o’clock in the afternoon? I go out for a quart of milk, I come home, and find my son treating his body like it was an amusement park!" She would be ranked higher if it wasn't for four very funny characters...

4 Kramer

Perhaps it's because Kramer is based on a real character that he feels so real and so well-crafted. He always literally crashes into Jerry's place, claiming that they promised each other that they could eat each other's food, and he treats it like his very own apartment.

The fact that Kramer really lives life according to his own rules and doesn't listen to anyone else is endearing. It's also hilarious. This main character is ranked at number four on this list because he always acts in an expected way and he always delivers comedic lines perfectly. One of his best? When he says, "Who's gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It's chocolate, it's peppermint—it's delicious."

3 Jerry

Jerry is beyond neurotic, and while it might seem strange that he's not ranked number one on a list of the funniest main characters on his very own TV show, that just speaks to how truly hilarious some of the others are.

Jerry is always funny and always cracking jokes no matter what situation he finds himself in, so he's earned a number three spot on this list. Jerry Seinfeld is legendary for starting the type of comedy that relies on observations and commentary on the weird things that we all notice about daily life. He even has a perfect way of summing up watching TV: as he says in the season two episode "The Phone Message," "The bad thing about television is that everybody you see on television is doing something better than what you're doing."

2 George

George is the second funniest character on Seinfeld, and he has so many great moments that it's hard to even count. From his famous statement "The sea was angry that day, my friends" to when he moves back in with his parents and gets even more neurotic and upset, George has always got his own brand of humor. He's somehow sure of himself and nervous at the same time.

It's always fun to watch George's dynamic with Jerry, as the two support each other in their own way, but they also seem to egg each other on and get each other riled up. The show would absolutely not be the same without George.

1 Elaine

The horrible dancing, the exclamation point obsession, the many facial expressions -- it's clear that Elaine Benes is a very special TV character. And Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays this character with such perfect pitch that she is, hands down, the funniest person on Seinfeld.

Whether she's asking for someone to spare a square of toilet paper (and getting pissed off when the answer is no) or pondering if a date is spongeworthy, Elaine is always the best. She's not only the funniest main character on Seinfeld, but she just might be the most hilarious TV character, period.
