A show centered on the lives of women who are living in the prison system is riveting to say the least. Orange Is the New Black focuses on many aspects of the inmates at Litchfield's day to day lives, one of which is strife and rivalries that occur between individuals and groups.
Whether it started from a misunderstanding, their past, or for no reason at all, they all create interesting plot lines. Some rivalries make audiences want to tune in more, while others make us raise our eyebrows.
10 Makes No Sense: Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett v. Everyone
Pennsatucky is the character that audiences love to hate...and for good reason. The former meth addict made a name for herself amongst the other inmates for her self righteous attitude. Over time she made many enemies throughout Litchfield, whether it be Chapman, Carrie "Big Boo" Black, or another inmate that she pissed off in one way or another.
Despite her behavior throughout the early seasons eventually, Pennsatucky grows close with other inmates and the countless fights seemed unnecessary except to show her growth as a character.
9 Best: Alex Vause v. Piper Chapman
Sometimes it's hard to imagine a time when Vause and Chapman weren't in love, but for a lot of season 1, Piper held a lot of resentment to her former love for landing her in prison in the first place.
After they are on somewhat good terms, Vause continuously lies about snitching on Chapman and doing what works best for her in the end. Even though their rivalry was quick but passionate, the issues they had as fellow inmates continue to be a recurring issue in their now "marriage."
8 Makes No Sense: Aleida Diaz & Dayanara Diaz
You can't pick your family, but you can choose how you treat them. Aleida and Dayanara aren't the typical TV mother-daughter duo. They are 10x more dysfunctional to the point where you wonder how it's even possible. When Daya first came to Litchfield it was made clear that her mother was not happy to see her (but what mother would.) She also made Daya's life harder behind bars than need be, but not for no reason.
When her mom first came to prison Daya slept with her mom's then drug-dealing boyfriend. Even though it was out of spite, their actions and negative feelings toward one another seemed unnecessary and childish.
7 Best: Galina "Red" Reznikov v. Piper Chapman
One of the most excruciating plot-lines to watch in season 1 was Chapman's rivalry with Red. After insulting the prison's food, it comes to Piper's attention that Red is the cook. This leaving Piper in an uncomfortable situation that she unknowingly got herself into.
For the following days, Piper is subjected to no food from the kitchen staff or her fellow inmates in fear of retaliation of Red. This rivalry may not have lasted as long as others on this list, but it did set a precedent for audiences to know not to cross Red regardless if it's her food or her family.
6 Makes No Sense: Gloria v. Galina "Red" Reznikov
This rivalry is based mainly on cooking rights. Red lost her cooking privileges and it was immediately given to Gloria and the girls from "Spanish Harlem." This shifted the dynamic between the inmates because a new group had the power to choose what everyone eats from the select amount of ingredients.
Due to this shift, Red felt misplaced and lost without being in that position of power, so of course, she directed her frustrations at Gloria instead of either in a constructive manner or the guard who took her out of her position in the first place.
5 Best: Gloria v. Maria
There is nothing like a mother's love, and that is prominent with the rivalry between these two. During the riots, Gloria finds out that if she helps the guards escape that she could see her kids again. She tried to keep her plan quiet so that no one could interfere. Ultimately that failed when Maria overheard, and in turn, tried to take the deal for herself.
Their feud was fueled by the love that they have for their children. Maria has only seen her daughter on a few occasions since she was born in season 1, while Gloria is trying to parent her four kids from the inside. The betrayal of losing (or not knowing about) a life-changing opportunity, at the hands of a frenemy is hard enough, but having to see one another after the fact and neither got the outcome they wanted was just as brutal.
4 Makes No Sense: Piper Chapman v. Stella
Throughout season 3 audiences see Chapman start her own Prison-Panty business from scraps that she gets from her new job assignment in sewing women's underwear for a commercial company. Overtime Chapman recruits other inmates to wear the underwear so that she can sell them.
One of her recruits is her friends with benefits and eventual business partner Stella Carlin. Chapman may have mixed business with pleasure, but Stella was looking out for her soon-to-be post-prison self and stole Piper's profit. So, Chapman decided to stash contraband in Stella's bunk resulting in her release date being moved back. This rivalry was one-sided, cut-throat and honestly unnecessary.
3 Best: Carol v. Barbara
There's nothing like a family rivalry to add fuel to the fire. The Denning sisters were introduced to audiences in season 6, with Carol as the leader of the C block and Barbara the same for D block.
Always competing growing up, seeing them continue their fight with rivaling gangs shows how deep their hatred brewed. For a time, their groups were cooperative regarding their drug dealing business, but eventually, things hit a boiling point. The sisters mercilessly fought and resulted in both of their deaths. This fight was OITNB fan's version of Cain and Able. With such an intense hatred, they earned their spot as one of the best rivalries the show has ever seen.
2 Makes No Sense: Piper Chapman v. Susan "Crazy Eyes" Warren
Early in the series, we see Chapman trying to get used to things at Litchfield, and in the process, she makes a few missteps. In the process, she finds herself in a bind when Susan "Crazy Eyes" Warren has an unrequited crush on her. Not knowing how to let her down easy, Chapman somehow leads her on.
Trying to avoid any conflict was an ideal situation seeing that she got involved with the only inmate who has crazy in their nickname. As you can suspect, things didn't go well. As an act of retaliation, Crazy Eyes pees right outside of Chapman's bunk. This rivalry was short, sour, and made absolutely no sense, but we wouldn't expect anything less from Crazy Eyes.
1 Best: Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson v. Litchfield
There is no other moment in OITNB as heartbreaking as Taystee overwhelmed with grief when her best friend Poussey is accidentally murdered. This moment was the match that started a fire in her. Wanting justice for Poussey led Taystee to fight for changes inside Litchfield, and when those changes weren't taken seriously, they led to the prison riot.
Throughout the riots, audiences see Taystee become a leader and fight not only for justice but human decency in the prison. Seeing her set fire to what seemed like a mountain of hot Cheetos was a passion-filled statement. She would take nothing less than what they asked for. A quick round-up of snacks would not suffice for all the wrongs that they have done. All of the rivalries on this list made an impact in one way or another, but none completely changed the prison as this did.
