Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is getting significant new perks starting March 18th, including new games and free DLC content for all subscribers. Game Pass Ultimate is an elite tier of the Xbox One Game Pass subscription that provides the benefits of Xbox Live Gold and game streaming, as well as allowing players to stream games easily on their Windows 10 PC as well as Xbox.
Game Pass is quickly becoming a focus for Xbox as an easy way for players to get access to a growing catalog of more than 100 full games, including new releases, without needing to buy the game outright. The Netflix model of game streaming is gaining traction, and players that like it can’t do any better the Game Pass Ultimate, which includes access to certain games on the day of their release, Xbox Gold (which is normally $10 per month), and extra deals. Currently, gamers can sign up for Ultimate for $1 for their first month, after which it is $15 per month, while the normal Xbox Game Pass is available for $10 per month.
Now, Xbox has announced a brand new set of “Perks” that ultimate members will have access to beginning March 18th. These perks vary from game to game, but include regularly updated access to more in-game content and DLC, all free with membership. Starting perks include:
- Free ship components for building customized vessels in Sea of Thieves
- Special emotes and cosmetics, along with extra currency, for Phantasy Star Online 2
- Three starting tanks in World of Tanks: Mercenaries
- Five immediately unlocked gods and new character skins/voice lines in Smite
Future Perks will be ongoing, and will be added to the Game Pass tab on Xbox/PC for all Ultimate Subscribers. Along with these Perks, Xbox also mentioned several new games that will be coming soon to Game Pass console version in the next week, including Kona, The Surge 2, Bleeding Edge, and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. A number of new games will also be coming to the PC version of Xbox Game Pass in the near future, including Astrologaster, Bleeding Edge, and Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid.
It’s a timely move for Xbox, with so many having free time on their hands due to ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus closures, but the Perks system is clearly designed to be a permanent new fixture for Game Pass Ultimate subscribers. The big question is just how far it will go, as currently players on the traditional version of Game Pass have to buy big DLC and expansion packages on the Microsoft Store like everyone else, although they do get discounts. Will Perks eventually start bringing this kind of DLC to subscribers? For example, would Borderlands 3: Guns Love and Tentacles eventually become a Game Pass Perk? If so, this deal will be hard to pass up for Xbox players.
