Peter Weber's season of The Bachelor hasn't even finished airing yet and ABC has already announced they'll be revealing the lead for the upcoming season of The Bachelorette. While a couple of names have been thrown around, there's a case to be made for why it should be Clare Crawley.
Clare first appeared on Juan Pablo's season of The Bachelor in 2014, where she was the runner-up to contestant Nikki Ferrell. If you didn't watch the season, Juan Pablo is truly the worst Bachelor ever and Clare dodged a bullet by not receiving the final rose. She appeared later that summer on the first season of Bachelor in Paradise but quit in week 5 after an unsuccessful run. Clare came back to the beaches of Mexico for the second season but was eliminated during week 3 of the season. Her fourth time around was on The Bachelor: Winter Games in 2018 where she left the series single, but got engaged during the tell-all show for the series to Benoit Beauséjour-Savard. The pair had connected after the series ended and seemed quite happy, but announced their split a few months later in April 2018. Clare has been taking a break from Bachelor Nation since then, so why would she make a good choice for The Bachelorette now?
While some may use it as a negative, Clare's age is something that can be seen as a positive. In recent years it's become increasingly difficult to take The Bachelor or The Bachelorette seriously when the lead is a 25 or 26-year-old trying to find a husband or wife amongst a group of 23-year-olds. If Clare were The Bachelorette, she would be a more realistic lead because (presumably) ABC would have to cast men who are in their late twenties or thirties in order to match Clare. With Clare as the lead, the franchise could break the cycle of twenty-somethings who see Bachelor Nation as their opportunity to gain a Revolve sponsor and cast men who have established careers already and are actually looking for a relationship. As well, a 38-year-old has a much more established sense of self than most 25-year-olds, which would be a benefit for Clare when determining which men she could see as her future husband.
If viewers are looking for more negatives to use against Clare, there's no doubt that it's going to be brought up that she's a Bachelor Nation veteran, having already appeared four times on three different shows. While that is more times than most, Clare's experience can be seen as a positive. She understands how the process works and she'll be able to determine who she wants to keep or send home more easily because she's confident in what she wants. She's no stranger to criticism, so Clare will be able to deal with viewer reactions better than others coming off the show. And she is already prepared for how taxing the process can be because she's experienced it. Additionally, Clare always manages to bring the drama to the screen, so there's no chance that her season would be boring, regardless of her multiple appearances.
She's definitely not the obvious choice, and picking Clare Crawley for The Bachelorette will likely illicit the same reactions as when Arie Luyendyk Jr. was announced as The Bachelor years after his season. Some fans aren't going to know who she is; others will know exactly who she is and have a lot to say about it. Yes she's a little older and yes she's had her fair share of opportunities, but Clare could be just what the franchise needs to offset the chaos of the most recent season of The Bachelor and give viewers an entertaining season that actually ends in a couple who gets engaged and makes it down the aisle in a Bachelor Nation dreamy TV wedding.
