The OC: 10 Most Hated Storylines | ScreenRant

The OC will go down in history as one of the oddest teen soap operas that basically played a role in shaping our youth. Despite how silly and over the top the early 2000s series could be, we genuinely fell in love with these characters. Whether it was the goofy Seth Cohen or the ditzy sweetheart Summer Roberts, these characters have stuck with us long after the series came to an end.

Yet there is no denying the fact that this show could often resort to trash television. We often found ourselves snorting with laughter at scenes that were not intended to be funny. Yet isn't that the beauty of soap operas?  With that being said, here are ten storylines from The OC that we simply couldn't stand.

10 THE "REBECCA BLOOM" STORYLINE

The OC didn't have a lot of happy-go-lucky elements going on, yet The Cohen family was our one saving grace. At least this was the case early on in the series. While Marissa, Julie, and Caleb would be busy making each other's lives miserable and while Ryan would be off somewhere beating up some surfer-beefcake as the poster child for toxic masculinity, The Cohen's were always there to provide us with some lighthearted comic relief. It was much needed in this series.

Yet that all changed when Rebecca Bloom came into the picture, trying to steal Sandy away from Kristen. The worst part? Sandy wasn't turning Rebecca away. Sandy and Kristen were the sole source of "relationship goals" at the beginning of the series, and that all turned "into dust" (pun intended) when Rebecca came along with her weak storyline that added nothing to The OC.

9 JULIE COOPER SNATCHING HER DAUGHTER'S MAN

We wanted to like Julie Cooper and give her the benefit of the doubt, we really did, but she was just a nasty human. All she cared about was her own satisfaction, and she had a bad habit of making Marissa's life a traumatizing nightmare. Julie knew her daughter was suffering, yet she continued to make out with her offspring's ex-boyfriend while "Night Moves" distractingly blared in the background. Now we can never hear that song the same way again. It was proof that on The OC no one had any morals.

8 SETH DANGLING TWO GIRLS AT ONCE

Come on now. We know Adam Brody is one handsome hunk, but his geeky persona on The OC doesn't necessarily qualify him to be a chick magnet. He has two girls pining after him, one that he adores because of her personality (Anna) and one that he loves because she looks dynamite in a Wonder Woman costume (Summer) Who does lover-boy choose? Summer, of course, because apparently looks are more important than personality.

It would be one thing if Summer wasn't so mean to Seth at the beginning of the series, but she treated him terribly and Anna acted like Seth was some kind of God. Of course, he chose the girl who treated him like dirt, because as previously stated this show has no morals. Thankfully, Summer grew out of her mean-girl phase and Seth and Summer became one of the best couples on TV. Yet we couldn't help but feel terrible for Anna who had a heart of gold and was genuinely a good match for Seth.

7 RYAN BEATING UP EVERYONE IN SIGHT

It became comical whenever Ryan would beat somebody up because he did it in the third act of nearly every episode. He'd throw a punch as often as Seth would throw a self-deprecating joke. It was constant. The head butting, the angry music in the background, the fact that Ryan Atwood was from the big bad streets of Chino even though Chino's actually a great city to live in... it was all just laughable. What kind of person acts like Ryan and in what world would he be best friends with Seth Cohen?

6 RYAN STARTS CAGE FIGHTING BECAUSE WHY NOT?

When Marissa Cooper dies, (which we will most definitely get to on this list,) Ryan does not take it well. This is totally understandable. The two of them shared an earnest connection and she was the one who welcomed him into the world of The OC with open arms. When she passed, Ryan decided to take up a cage fighting career and he got severely beaten up while "Hallelujah" played in the background. This show didn't know what genre it wanted to be. This whole plotline was a solid cringe-fest and it did nothing whatsoever to improve the series.

5 MARISSA COOPER'S DEATH

Marissa Cooper's death was one big slap in the face to fans of The O.C as well as Mischa Barton's character. Sure, she had her problems, and we were sometimes ticked off with her actions. But the thing is, her character was finally on the road to improvement and she was headed in the right direction in life where she planned on starting a new life in Greece.

Yet on The OC characters apparently aren't allowed to have happy endings, and instead of giving Marissa some form of peace, they kill her instead. The main character. What was the point?  We're still recovering from that moment.

4 JOHNNY'S DEATH

Johnny who? You might have totally wiped this character from your memory due to the fact that he was such a forgettable dude. Johnny was a replaceable surfer-bro with swoopy hair and a big old schoolgirl crush on Marissa. When this cardboard cutout of a character got friend-zoned by Marissa (who he knew for all of five seconds) he became quite the sad boy.

That, on top of the fact that he could no longer compete in the surfing competition, made him self destructive. Is it just us or are these the most privileged issues someone could possibly have? Only on The OC. He is so sad, in fact, that he decides to climb a bunch of rocks while drunk (huh?) and then he falls to his death. The thing is, we don't really care about this moment because we are never given the opportunity to care about Johnny. He's just too bland.

3 ANYTHING INVOLVING DENNIS "CHILI" CHILDRESS

Dennis "Chili" Childress makes us want to roll our eyes just thinking about him. Sorry to bring this kid back to your memory but yeah, any storyline that involved him was definitely worth skipping over. This kid was a Seth Cohen-knockoff, and the character was so annoying/geeky that he made Save By The Bell's Screech seem suave.

2 SETH BURNS DOWN HIS DAD'S OFFICE WITH A JOINT

We couldn't help but burst out in laughter during this moment that was intended to be serious. Remember when Seth burned down Sandy's office with the joint that he was smoking? Since when did The OC turn into an after school special? This kind of thing just doesn't happen in real life and we hated this plotline more than most. Moral of the story is don't smoke dope kids, or you'll end up accidentally burning down your father's office to bits.

1 MMM-WATCHYA SAYYYYY

And finally, perhaps the most hilarious moment on television that wasn't intended to be hilarious at all was the classic storyline when Marissa shot Trey. One of the most famous SNL skits starring Andy Samburg made a parody out of this scene and it isn't hard to understand why.

It was so overly dramatic and poorly written that we can't help but consider it to be one of the worst storylines on the show. Although the series had its genuine comedic moments, this scene made us laugh the hardest.
