The Expendables: 5 More Action Stars Who Should Join The Team (& 5 Who Shouldn't)

As far as we know, The Expendables 4 is still supposed to happen. Everyone involved says there’s a script, it’s only a question of when and where. Well, let us had a third question: who? Every Expendables sequel brings in more and more action stars, old ones and new ones. So who should get the call this time around? Who should stay home?

After all, the Expendables movies might seem like nothing more than a greatest hits of action movies from the past (which, OK, they mostly are), but they still have their very own flavor and patterns. Not everyone is going to be a good fit, as Bruce Willis has proven. This list takes a look at both sides and will let you know exactly who would be a good match, and who would be better off left on the sidelines.

10 SHOULD: Jackie Chan

This guy has been one of the most consistent action stars of the past four decades in Hong Kong and in the US. His movies are not always classics, but you know you are always in for mind-boggling action sequences.

The fact that he still does his own stunts this far in his 60s is impressive on its own, and The Expendables could use someone whose style is more physical and less choreographed. Let’s get some more gravity-defying stunts done in real time in this thing.

9 SHOULDN’T: Steven Seagal

There was a time where Steven Seagal would have been good for a laugh, either in a full role or in a cameo like Chuck Norris. However, the man keeps getting more ridiculous and more disconnected from the real world as the years passes.

There’s also the various claims made against him, including feuds with his own stuntmen and, oh yeah, multiple claims of sexual harassment. The man appears to be a despicable character who The Expendables would do well to stay away from.

8 SHOULD: Nicolas Cage

The greatest shame of the Expendables franchise is having a villain such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and killing him off after a single movie. So how can you get someone else who is just as outlandish and who will play their character in an even bigger way? That’s where Nicolas Cage comes in.

His turn in Face/Off is the only evidence you need to convince you of his action star credentials, and if you take a look at any movie he has made since The Wicker Man, you’ll see that Cage understands that these things are not to be taken seriously.

7 SHOULDN’T: John Travolta

There was a time in the 90s when John Travolta could almost have convinced us that he could cut it as an action star. The last twenty years, starting with Battlefield Earth, have shown us the opposite.

The closest he has since come to topping his Broken Arrow days was with From Paris With Love, a movie that was made by the same team that brought us Taken, but which failed to deliver the same kind of career comeback for its main star. His movies since then have been abysmal at best, so The Expendables should keep their distance.

6 SHOULD: Gina Carano

Ronda Rousey got the spot in the last Expendables as the team’s latest MMA transfer, but it didn’t work out so well. Instead, why not get Gina Carano, whose MMA credentials might be a tiny bit less impressive, but whose acting is a lot more convincing?

Her turn in The Mandalorian was a revelation to many observers, but the truth is that she has been making her path in Hollywood for a little while. She has been getting steady work since 2014, getting better and better each time. She’d be perfect for this kind of project.

5 SHOULDN’T: Vin Diesel

Vin Diesel is a weird case. He has been starring in basically nothing but action movies with very few exceptions, and yet, none of them have really made him a household name in Hollywood.

Even the franchise for which he is best known for has basically been hijacked by Dwayne Johnson and relegated him to a second role. He will always have Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, but even those movies are not nearly as good as their reputation would tell you.

4 SHOULD: Liam Neeson

Should he participate in The Expendables 4, Liam Neeson would immediately become the best actor to ever star in the franchise. Imagine the grace and poise he would bring to a role which is corny by design.

He has also proven that he can maintain his regal appearance in action sequences through three Taken movies and countless other follow-ups that made him play the same character, but in increasingly more ridiculous settings. Simply put, The Expendables could us his very particular set of skills.

3 SHOULDN’T: Hulk Hogan

At first glance, Hulk Hogan seems like he would check all the boxes. He was a star and a household name in the 80s, and he did act in a few action movies along the way. Unfortunately, those two things were not related at all.

While his wrestling career redefined an industry, his movies were each somehow more ridiculous than the last one. His career inside and outside of Hollywood has been pretty quiet in the past few years, so it just seems like Hogan would be better left in the past.

2 SHOULD: Carl Weathers

Sylvester Stallone got to hang out with Dolph Lundgren for three movies, but let’s not forget about his original Rocky adversary and eventual friend: Carl Weathers, also known as Apollo Creed.

For those who are fearing that the man is getting up there in terms of age, let’s remind everyone that Weathers is actually younger than Stallone. His role in The Mandalorian has proven that he can still go, and his action legacy alone warrants a spot on the team. Rocky, Predator, Action Jackson... Need we say more?

1 SHOULDN’T: Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson is an amazing action star, a charming actor, and someone who seems to be a genuinely good person. In a perfect world, he would be a part of The Expendables, and would even have enough star power to probably take over the whole team.

However, he’s also one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, and someone who has way too much on their plate and way too much credibility for something that is usually seen as the last hurrah for aging stars.
