The Batman star Jeffrey Wright was photographed sporting what might be the mustache he'll wear as Commissioner Jim Gordon in the newest reboot of the DC Comic franchise. Details on director Matt Reeves' vision for The Batman have been scarce, aside from a few official updates from the director himself. The cast has been confirmed to star Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Colin Farrell as Penguin, John Turturro as mob boss Carmine Falcone, and Wright as Gordon. Beyond casting details (and a first look at the Batsuit), everything else about the production remains a mystery, including whether or not Wright's Gordon would keep the character's classic 'stache.
In the comics, Commissioner Jim Gordon has long been known for the iconic thick, bushy mustache he wears. The beleaguered leader of the Gotham police department has appeared in nearly every incarnation of Batman. Wright is the eighth actor to portray the character in a live-action appearance following Gary Oldman, Ben McKenzie, Neil Hamilton, Pat Hingle, J.K. Simmons, and Lyle Talbot. Batman 1966 star Hamilton, and Talbot who played Gordon in the 1949 Batman and Robin serial film, both opted to forgo the facial fur for their portrayals. Hingle, Simmons, and Oldman, on the other hand, all rocked various types of whiskers for their versions, and McKenzie eventually teased the beginnings of a mustache when he played a much younger Gordon on Fox's Gotham series.
It seems like Wright will honor the character's origins, as a recent picture of the actor posted on Twitter reveals he's sporting quite a lot of lip foliage. Posing out of costume, the actor's facial hair certainly seems to indicate the direction he's going in for Gordon's look. Plus, the picture was taken in London, where The Batman is currently filming. However, since this isn't an official set photo, and Wright's not in costume, there is a possibility the mustache is entirely unrelated to Gordon's appearance.
Reeve's take on Batman is highly anticipated for many reasons, but Wright's casting is certainly high on the list. Wright has proven himself time and again to be a fantastic actor, fully committed to the parts he plays. It will be interesting to see if he brings some of the intensity of his Westworld performance to The Batman. The director has hinted that his story takes place in year two of Bruce Wayne's time as Batman, meaning Wright's Gordon might not even be commissioner yet. That year two rumor was further fueled when Wright posted a copy of a Batman trade paperback that collects the very first issues of the character's adventures.
Wright looks fantastic with the mustache, and it would be great if this ended up being his final look for the film. While fans are still mostly in the dark regarding The Batman, each new hint and leak only increases anticipation for the first trailer's eventual release. Although with a premiere date of June 25, 2021, it might be months before a trailer sees the light of day.
