Rick and Morty Start A Mutiny In Hell In New Comic | Screen Rant

Rick and Morty are going to Hell this summer. But, as anyone who's dealt with the nihilistic pair might tell you, that's likely more of a problem for Hell than for those two. Case in point: in June's Rick and Morty Go To Hell #3, Rick Sanchez's efforts to raise a little hell kick off a diabolical mutiny.

Rick and Morty Go To Hell is a five-issue miniseries written by Ryan Ferrier (D4VE, Death Orb) and illustrated by artist Constanza Oroza. This is the latest in a years-long catalog of Rick and Morty comics that include an ongoing series that has lasted over fifty issues, one-shots that explore minor characters like killing aficionado Krombopulos Michael, and crossovers with other properties including Dungeons and Dragons.

The premise of Go To Hell is as straightforward as the name suggests: the dimension-hopping scientist and his neurotic grandson consign themselves to the flames of the sinner's afterlife on another gratuitous, genre-hopping voyage. Series publisher Oni Press describes the series as "a horrific adventure to speak to... the manager." In the solicitation for issue 3 (which you can read below), the story has taken a chaotic turn: an uprising is brewing in Hell and the "smartest man in the universe" has kicked it off. The solicit explains the causality here with "because of course", which is unlikely to surprise readers. If someone else had incited the problems facing our protagonists, would it really be a Rick and Morty story?

Until the series begins in April, it's a mystery whether the "manager" referred to in the preview is the same diabolical entity featured in the episode "Something Ricked This Way Comes". Lucius Needful, cursed item vendor and self-professed as the Devil himself, created a thriving and successful work relationship with Morty's sister Summer that inspired Rick to destroy Needful's business model out of spite. While Rick and Summer got their revenge for Needful's inevitable betrayal, tying off that particular thread, it's clear that nobody in the Smith family has a good relationship with this incarnation of Old Scratch. It could be the same character, or maybe the devil who runs Hell and the devil who sells cursed sneakers are entirely different beings, similarly to Marvel's numerous entities that could claim the title. Either way, it's exactly the sort of continuity nod that the series' obsessive fanbase demands.

Readers who want to watch Rick and Morty face eternal torture can check out Rick and Morty Go To Hell #3 on June 24th, 2020. To follow the story from the beginning, watch for issue 1 at local comics shops and digital providers on April 29th, 2020.
