Many shows have come and go, some are still around but all shows are known to have something peculiar about them. Game of Thrones is known for its complex storylines that are intertwined; Merlin is known for its peculiar angle to magic; Outlander is known for blending two different eras and love stories.
Outlander tells concise stories about every character. One of its many characters is Roger Mackenzie, the adopted son of Reverend Reginal Wakefield. He was an orphan from a young age after losing his parents to war. He played a crucial part in the show and some of his words caught our attention. Here are Roger’s 10 most quotable lines:
10 “Words Have Consequences”
When love happens, lovers are bound to be jealous; in fact, some believe it’s a sign of true love. Roger was jealous of the fact that Brianna held back a piece of personal information from him but she told another man about it. This phrase carries so much power as long as the law of cause and effect still exists. However, though words carry power some statements are just mere blabbering and don’t carry meaning or ulterior motives. Roger was sure of Brianna’s love for him so he knew what she said to another man didn’t matter.
9 “What Do You Truly Believe?”
Humans do what they believe in with all their hearts. A being who has no belief whatsoever is a lower animal. Roger asked Brianna this question to be sure of her motive and feeling toward him. He isn’t a cry baby; every man just wants to be sure he is truly loved. If we could be sure of what we truly believe about each other maybe the world would be a better place. The scriptwriters of Outlander made sure dialogues about love are sincere, which is one of its selling points.
8 “Take Me To My Son”
For Roger, the family is first. Outlander preached so many things about love, family, and relationship. Roger said these words so he could see a child that wasn’t his’ but who cares? Having lost his parents to war and been adopted and raised by his maternal great-uncle, he cherishes the warmth of family. Roger is a lover-boy as portrayed in the show. He has an undying passion for Diana and her son which he called his own. Roger loved Bree no doubt but who would think he’ll love the child that isn't his' also?
7 “I Didn't Leave Because We Argued. I Left Because She Told Me To Go.”
After having a great time with the love of his life, being asked to leave out of anger by the same person is the worst thing that could happen to a man. Bree and Roger’s love is one of the hottest in Outlander; traveling a thousand miles in time is proof that it is.
The phrase preaches two ethics: 1) lovers don't separate because of an argument or a misunderstanding, they stay and resolve it if they are truly in love. 2) When your lover says to leave and they mean it, leaving is the best. As they say, if you truly love something, let it go.
6 “I Avoided Confrontation. I Kept The Peace.”
This sounds like Jackie Chan’s line in Jackie Chan’s Adventures, “Do not fight when you can run.” It is not cowardice. Knowing where to be brave and where to be timid is one of the abilities of great men, it isn’t snitching either. This isn’t an excuse to shy away from challenges but there’s a thin line between knowing when to be brave and when not to. The ability to understand when to make these choices goes a long way. It is a great ethic as many people would still be alive if they knew this.
5 “Turn Your Back On Love And Take Your Freedom. Save Yourself Because If You Don't, No One Ever Will.”
Maybe he gave up on love but it doesn’t matter like knowing when to go back or keep pushing on love. Love can be frustrating and tiring; it can be fatal at times, ask Romeo and Juliet or Jack in Titanic. Love is good and beautiful but It's extreme when life is at stake, Roger knew this. No one would be happy if their story ends like that of Gatsby in the Great Gatsby, it was tragic. Knowing when to call it quits and let go may be hard but it is worth learning.
4 “But The Difference Is I've Learned Something From My Pain. I've Changed.”
It’s okay to learn from everything but to learn from one’s mistakes can’t be compared to other lessons. As they say, Pain is the best teacher. When you are about to do the same mistake that caused you some pain, your brain tingles and your body warns you.
Maybe he made a mistake by traveling in time or falling in love in the first place. He, however, learned from it. He has been through a lot but he made it a learning process and he has changed. It made him a better man.
3 “Brianna, I Love You All, Or Not At All.”
You have to do what you have to do. When you want to love, go all in: this is the message Roger passed with these words. Many love stories were short-lived because lovers weren't giving their all. He doesn’t just make vague statements, he means it when he says it and Brianna knew this well. Roger and Brianna's love story makes more sense when you read from the Outlander book series, Roger wanted to be with her all his days. Who would want to travel in time in vain? It’s a foolish thing to do.
2 “Did It Hurt, The First Time?”
Almost everyone will ask or be asked this question. It’s not necessarily a first-timer at lovemaking, but a first-timer at many things. However, this quote came after Brianna and Roger’s first lovemaking; it was Brianna’s first time. Some women may not be comfortable when asked this question but some men want to ask as it shows they care and that the act means a lot to them.
Brianna showed no shyness when Roger asked, she gave him a straight, sincere and the expected reply for a first-timer, “yes, but I liked it.”
1 “You'll Marry Me?”
Yes! He popped the question. It’s the moment where everyone starts shouting and coaxing the lady, “say yes! say yes!” Brianna, however, didn’t need any coaxing from anyone, she loved Roger and was ready to go all the way with him. She had doubts the first time he asked but she won’t let him go this time, she said: "How can I say no to a man who followed me for 200 years?” It's a pity some men do get rejected, it's unlucky and saddening. But no one would expect a "no" from Brianna. Roger did his part well by loving her all the way and she paid him back with a "yes."
