The latest domino to fall following the costly moving of No Time to Die's release date is the action-comedy My Spy, which pushes its release to mid-April. The film stars Dave Bautista as an undercover spy whose mission is thwarted by a 9-year-old girl, played by Big Little Lies actress Chloe Coleman. In exchange for keeping his cover, Bautista's character agrees to teach Coleman's how to be a spy.
Initially, My Spy had a projected release date of March 13. The marketing blitz for the STXFilms production was on, with Bautista joining TikTok to try and push the film. Nevertheless, the movie was in grave danger of finishing third at the box office, with Bloodshot and The Hunt both coming out on the same day. With No Time to Die moving its release date due to the evolving coronavirus crisis, the studio behind My Spy saw an opportunity worth taking.
Variety reports My Spy's new release date is April 17, a full month later than expected - this was after multiple previous delays. That weekend was opened up by Trolls World Tour, which moved up a week from April 17 to April 10 to grab the coveted slot No Time to Die previously occupied. This should bring a stop to the rapid-fire movie release date swapping, as it doesn't seem likely a studio would risk moving a release to an earlier date unless it had plenty of marketing in advance.
With the release date moved to April 17, My Spy will now primarily face horror film Antlers and drama Charm City Kings in their first weekend at the box office, a much more favorable opportunity for the family comedy. My Spy has already opened in Australia and New Zealand, creating a rolling release across the globe. But it will also give STXFilms more time to try and promote the film.
All the shifting schedules were prompted by No Time to Die's move, which stemmed from fears surrounding the impact coronavirus could have on ticket sales. The global health scare is wreaking havoc across the entertainment industry. Recently, the city of Austin, Texas, canceled the famed SXSW conference, Emerald City Comic Con was postponed, and there's even talk of E3 2020 getting canceled. There's a good chance we're going to be seeing impacts in the film industry beyond the shifting release dates of My Spy.
