The popular Netflix show Élite is one of the most popular Spanish shows. Its 3rd season is forecast to bring more drama than ever before. Élite follows the lives of the students at Las Encinas; a school primarily for the elites of society.
For the past 2 seasons, the writers have done everything in their power to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, providing twists and shocking revelations at every turn. What makes Élite one of Netflix's most riveting dramas. And as we have been hinted in the promotional trailer for season 3, there are more twists and turns on the horizon. So in preparation for the 3rd upcoming season, here are:10 Storylines You Need To Know About, Ahead Of Season 3 (SPOILERS AHEAD).
10 Marina’s Murder
The daughter and sister of Las Encina's richest, Marina Nunier was one of Élite’s most important characters. She was Samuel, Nadia and Christian’s entry into the lavish lifestyles of Guzman, Lucrecia and the rest of the crew.
However, it was Marina’s murder that took Élite from a posh high school drama to a murder mystery. Without her murder and the many complications that follow thereafter, there would be no battles of the 'elites'. Even though the 1st season, makes us wait till the finale to find out who killed Marina; marina’s murder is the storyline at the crux of Élite neverending dramas.
9 Samuel
Samuel is also one of the shows most important characters. Played by Itzan Escamilla, Samuel or ‘Samu’ is a regular boy from a low-income family who is given the chance to attend Las Encinas. It is there he meets with Marina and not only befriends but also falls in love with her. Unlike his brother, Samu is shy and less experienced and eventually gets into a battle with his brother for Marina’s heart.
Samu’s infatuation for Marina along with Nano’s betrayal forms part of the complicated cycle of dramas that unfold in within his life. It is also what makes Samu at the center of Marina’s murder and make him and his brother prime murder suspects.
8 Nano
Nano is Samuel’s older brother. Nano is a central figure in the story specifically as he is linked to Marina. The two struck a cord and entered into a relationship behind Samuel’s back. Nano and Marina quickly fall in love which complicates things with Samu.
The audience knew that Nano is both betraying and lying to his brother but couldn’t help but root for Nano and Marina’s fast love. But as the events to the murder quickly unfold, we find out that Marina is pregnant with Nano’s child which complicates things even more. This complexity carries over into Season 2 and will most likely resurface in Season 3.
7 ‘OMANDER’
The relationship between drug dealer Omar and the Las Encinas’ principal's son Ander is a fan favorite. Since they both come from different worlds, their unlikely pairing not only captured audiences around the world. With a hinge of the ‘forbidden love’ storyline, in play, Omar and Ander’s relationship has shed light on the struggles that LGBTQIA+ couples face when there are family support and socio-economic barriers.
Despite the fact their relationship has been put to the test in both seasons, Omar and Ander’s love for each other is the most genuine and true in the show.
6 Nadia Y Guzman
Just like Omander, Nadia and Guzman ‘s relationship has also overcome some challenges. Guzman falls in love with Nadia by mistake as he is executing a revenge plan towards her. Nadia, who is Omar’s sister, comes from a devout Muslim household and out of her respect for her culture and parents, would not fall for Guzman’s pleasantries. However, she is eventually overcome by Guzman’s charm and pursuit of her.
Although there are some frustrating moments between the two, with Guzman returning to Lu at some point. Season 2 of Élite really consolidated with fans that this a relationship they want to see more of. So if you don’t want to miss out on this developing romantic story, please revisit Season 2 for some great Nadia and Guzman moments.
5 Cayetana
Élite is no stranger to lying and to liars. But following Carla’s lying scheme was different in that it showed the lengths needed in order for certain kids to fit in at Las Encinas. Unlike the other kids, Cayetana or “Caye” doesn’t come from a rich family, in fact, her mom works at the school as a cleaner and a maid at elites houses. In the world of Élite, people like Cayetana, don’t get a free entry. So to challenge her luck, Caye employs a comprehensive lying scheme claiming that she is a social guru and that her parents are also of high social stature.
She goes as far as inviting the rich kids to a party at a lavish house she claims she owns. Eventually, Caye’s lies are uncovered and she uses her newly outcast stature to get closer to Polo and later help him hide the murder weapon. Cayetana’s greatest role as a murder accomplice awaits her in Season 3 and we can’t wait to see what the writers do with her story.
4 Wealth
We couldn’t highlight character storylines without highlighting one of the most underlying storylines of Élite. Money, wealth, corruption showing how the rich can elude crimes and avoid all consequences, is sadly at the core of the show. One of the main examples of this is in the shady and sometimes illegal business dealings of Guzman and Marina’s and Carla’s father. The building collapse which propels for Nadia, Samu, and Christian to be given scholarships to Las Encinas was all part of a defunct and unethical construction build sponsored by these rich men.
Alongside the covering of murder, there are bribes and witness silencing which the rich and powerful can facilitate in this series. It is evident throughout all seasons that money, wealth and power are the main characters and have storylines of their own.
3 Murder Cover-Ups
At the end of Season 1, we find out that it was Polo who killed Marina and in doing so he incriminates both Carla and Christian who see him right after the act. In order to preserve the sanctity of her friendship with Polo and uphold the “rich kids pact” if we take care of our own, Carla forces both Christian and Polo to not speak of the murder and be remain oblivious to the issues that follow through.
This storyline is what kept audiences at the edge of their seats at the end of Season 1 and kept them excited till Season 2. Although it seemed as though, the truth had come to light in at the end of the second season, Polo’s supposed murder as shown in the promotional trailers indicates that the cycle of lies and cover-ups continues in this murder infused drama.
2 Complicated Relationships
As well as the romantic and forbidden love archetypal storylines, Élite has whipped up some controversial relationships storylines. First, it was Carla and Polo’s polyamorous ventures with Cristian and in Season 2 it’s the incestual love between Lucrecia and her half brother Valerio. In Carla and Polo’s defense, their adventures were initially done under the guise of “couples experimentation”.
In Lu and Valerio’s case, the conflict between sibling and romantic love is what makes us the audience both cringe and be sympathetic at the same time. We know its wrong, but somehow the showrunners make this incestuous storyline sincere. We can only expect that coming into Season 3, the audience will be presented with more complicated relationships and we can’t wait for the drama!
1 POLO
Polo is quite the character. He is an insecure ‘stuttering’ murderer whose social stature protects his behaviors. Polo, played by Álvaro Rico is the perfect metaphoric revelation of the lives of the elites. Even though everyone knows he killed Marina, he is somehow released from custody and made to re-enter the lives of the Las Encinas gang by the end of Season 2.
Going into Season 3, Polo is at the center of another murder mystery; although this time he seems to be the victim. Before the release of the new season, fans should revisit the Polo storyline searching for clues as to who may have killed him?!
