JSA's Doctor Mid-Nite Costume First Look in DC's Stargirl Set Photos

New photos from the set of Stargirl feature the first look at the costume for the Justice Society of America's Doctor Mid-Nite. Airing first on DC Universe and then The CW the following day, Stargirl will premiere in late-May, having had its release pushed back a week. Based on the DC Comics character created by Geoff Johns, Stargirl follows teenager Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she discovers the Cosmic Staff and uses its powers to become a superhero.

Many years prior to this, Courtney's stepfather, Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson), was the sidekick to a hero called Starman (Joel McHale) and operated under the name, Stripesy. After his stepdaughter discovers the staff, however, Dugan begins assisting her by piloting a 15 ft mech called S.T.R.I.P.E.. Stargirl will also see Courtney lead a new generation of heroes inspired by the Justice Society of America (or JSA), which in addition to Starman, originally included Wildcat (Brian Stapf), Hourman (Lou Ferrigno, Jr.), and Doctor Mid-Nite (Henry Thomas). Along with Courtney's adventures in the present, Stargirl will flashback to the time of the original JSA, and it's in these scenes that classic costumes like Doctor Mid-Nite's will be featured.

Shared on Instagram by LJ Supersuits, the official account of costume designer Laura Jean Shannon and her team, these photos from the Stargirl set show Doctor Mid-Nite actor, Henry Thomas in his full regalia. Though shot only from the side and not head on, it's clear from the photos that his costume is very accurate to the Golden Age Doctor Mid-Nite costume from the comics. Check it out, below.

Much like in the pages of DC Comics, this Doctor Mid-Nite costume has a red tunic, green hooded cape, and goggles - a key part of Doctor Mid-Nite's costumes as it's these lenses that can fine tune his superpower of enhanced night vision, not to mention, allow him to see in brighter settings. The details are tad more practical, though, with a rough leather texture to the gloves and useful-looking pouches on the belt. It's hard to tell from this angle, but the costume also appears to have a logo of sorts on the chest. Doctor Mid-Nite can typically be seen with crescent moon-shaped buttons down the front of his tunic, and this change appears to be one way Stargirl's costume for the JSA's Doctor Mid-Nite is differing from the comics.

In addition with this version of Doctor Mid-Nite, Stargirl will also include a young woman as the new Doctor Mid-Nite, Beth Chapel (Anjelika Washington). In the comics, the Beth Chapel version of Doctor Mid-Nite's costume is wildly different from the Golden Age version, so it'll be interesting to see what modern take Stargirl's costume department will come up with for her.
