Girls Trip 2 Script To Be Written By The Cast Says Tiffany Haddish

Tiffany Haddish has revealed a script for Girls Trip 2 is being written by the ladies from the original film. The first Girls Trip debuted in theaters in 2017 and became a major hit. It earned $140.8 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of about $20 million in a much-needed win for the comedy genre at the time. Additionally, it performed well with critics, scoring 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. There have been rumblings about a sequel for a while, but nothing has been made official. However, based on the performance of the first, it wouldn't be shocking if the sequel gets greenlit eventually.

Girls Trip focused on a group of friends (Haddish, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, and Jada Pinkett Smith) who reunite in New Orleans for the Essence Music Festival. Over the course of the weekend, the women catch up, uncover new secrets, and get into a whole lot of trouble. The film was highly praised for its laugh-out-loud antics and the performances of the women, especially in the case of Haddish. Girls Trip was Haddish's star-making role and turned her into a household name.

While speaking to HuffPost about a variety of topics (including her current quarantine), Haddish revealed she's been in contact with the ladies from Girls Trip, and that they're beginning to work on a sequel. She first mentioned that the ladies have already gathered for one Zoom call to check in on each other, and then said that they'll be meeting up for another call later this week to start writing the script for Girls Trip 2.

This is because talks regarding the sequel treatment from the original Girls Trip co-writer, Tracy Oliver, fell through due to money. Now, Haddish said, the women are ready to continue on their own. Haddish also added that, "We might decide not to even make it ‘Girls Trip.' Maybe we’ll do a different story just in case no one wants to make ‘Girls Trip 2.’"

Even if Girls Trip 2 never comes to fruition, audiences would surely be excited to see another movie with this ensemble. Haddish, Hall, Latifah, and Smith brought their A-game with the original and proved they could be quite the comedic forceGirls Trip has largely been considered one of the best comedies in recent years, and it would be a shame if these women never got the chance to share the big screen again. Provided Girls Trip 2 could perform as well as the first, it would be a worthy investment for Universal. It might be a while before Girls Trip 2 (or whatever movie Haddish and the others cook up) arrives, but it can be expected that audiences will be happy to see it.
