Cube flew under the radar upon its original release, but it’s still seen as one of the more satisfying puzzling horror films, but one of the movie’s biggest mysteries is who constructed the twisted prison in the first place.
Cube is a startlingly mature claustrophobic horror from came out of Canada in the late ‘90s and helped put unconventional horror director Vincenzo Natali on many people’s radars. Cube plays out like one of the better Twilight Zone episodes or a disturbing piece of theater that places seven strangers in a surreal prison that defies explanation. Cube gets inventive use out of its tight quarters and dishes out sophisticated gore as these prisoners fail to escape from their confinement.
Cube is a smart mix of bloody carnage and intelligent storytelling that’s turned into a cult classic since its release and spawned both a sequel and prequel that continues to explore the film’s trippy premise. The Cube movies are primarily interested in how to escape this prison—and if escape is even possible—as these individuals slowly learn more about each other and avoid disturbing deaths that would even make Jigsaw blush. As important as survival is in the Cube films, another major factor in this puzzle is who built this punishing prison.
Cube is coy when it comes to giving out answers, and it’s a better film for it, but the movie does provide some insight on who helped design the high-tech torture chamber that tests the film’s unsuspecting prisoners. The victims stuck within this closure are all naturally suspicious of each other and don’t know what the real truth is here. As the dangers of the Cube begin to wear down these prisoners, David Worth, one of the more negative individuals who are caught up in this scenario, reveals that he has insider knowledge on their prison. David was manipulated against his will by the IZON company to use his proficient knowledge to design the prison’s outer cube-like shell.
Even though David has helped this company figure out the math and science behind this experimental kind of torture, he’s still been taken advantage of and just as helpless as everyone else in this scenario. David explains that the Cube’s original purpose has long been forgotten and it’s merely being used now because it’s construction would otherwise be irrelevant if it went to waste. David’s knowledge on the Cube’s construction and its shell allows Leaven to make some considerable headway regarding the Cube’s structure and just how many rooms are present in this prison, even if that information doesn’t help them out much.
Ultimately, when a possible exit is reached within the Cube, Worth is unable to leave the prison that he helped construct. He’s witnessed endless traps and brutal deaths, but his time within the Cube has broken his mind and he no longer sees the point of a life outside of the structure. Worth’s limited understanding of the Cube is partly what undoes him in the end as the vastness of this experiment is too much for him to handle. Cube remains one of the bleakest horror films out there, but this nihilistic ending reinforces why it’s such a unique experience.
