As The CW's latest addition to the Arrowverse, the Greg Berlanti-led Batwoman made television history as the first series to showcase a lesbian superhero lead character. Deep into season one, audiences haven't been disappointed as Kate Kane thrashes villains in the criminal underbelly of Gotham whilst juggling a surprising number of potential love interests. And it's not just Kate that seems to have her hands full, as quite a variety of romances have sparked during the show's first season.
Amid chaotic big-bad fight sequences, shadowy vigilantism, near-deaths, and some seriously fancy soirees, here are Batwoman's most prominent romances, ranked.
8 Jacob Kane and Catherine Hamilton-Kane
Typically, starting a relationship by hiring a coroner to fake forensic evidence to prove your soon to be husband's daughter is dead isn't the best way to kick off a life together, and this became clear once Catherine's dirty secret was drudged up. Though Catherine was Jacob's shoulder to cry on while grieving his family's deaths, and she helped him build the Crows, her shady behavior and attempts to cover her past wrongdoings made her unforgivable.
The couple had no real chemistry and was on the brink of divorce before Catherine's untimely (and tragic) death at the hands of Alice, and fans never got attached to their relationship.
7 Chuck Dodgson and Alice
Conveniently sharing a similar name to the literary genius who created Alice In Wonderland, Charles Dodgson, Alice and Chuck's relationship was only ever briefly touched on. It was clear to viewers Alice was using Chuck as a means to get important intel on the Crows, as her on-and-off lover was a Crows agent moonlighting as the Wonderland Gang's second-in-command.
Their relationship was mostly one-sided, with Alice conveniently sending Chuck to do her biddings. Alice was too powerful for Chuck and should probably remain single and free for the time being.
6 Sophie Moore and Tyler
After dumping Kate, joining the Crows, and marrying a quintessentially perfect man in Tyler, it appeared at first like Sophie had gotten everything she wanted. Except Tyler wasn't what she wanted, which became clear when Kate arrived back in town and sparked up still-unresolved feelings. Though Tyler tried to be as supportive a husband as possible, he soon realized that Sophie wasn't in love with him or ready for the same future he was and her history with Kate was far more complicated than what met the eye.
Their marriage was put on ice when Tyler suggested Sophie needed to figure out her feelings. Nobody was sad to see Tyler go. There wasn't much of a relationship for fans to invest in, and Tyler was more of a means to an end plot-wise than a fully realized character.
5 Kate Kane and Reagan
This somewhat unforgettable relationship was so short-lived, you could've blinked and missed it. After being told by Sophie she needed to move on, Kate quickly hopped in bed with Reagan, a bartender she met out in Gotham. Though the two had some solid chemistry, things got derailed due to Kate's poor attempts to separate her romantic life with her newfound role as the city's masked vigilante. Reagan wasn't interested in playing second fiddle and ultimately, the pair ended when Kate admitted she probably couldn't share all of herself in the relationship.
While the duo fizzled quickly, they had some enjoyable moments, and Reagan served to make Sophie jealous, which only reconfirmed that Kate's ex probably wasn't so much of an 'ex' after all.
4 Kate Kane and Julia Pennyworth
Exes with fiery chemistry, Kate and Julia are both undercover crime-fighters (Julia is a British spy) with inherent toughness and battle wounds. Fans picked up on their connection when Julia stopped in briefly to deal with some business and pose as Batwoman to throw Sophie off the scent. When she returned later in the season to save Sophie - and then to reconnect with Kate - the lingering connection was set alight when a struggling Kate kissed Julia on the side of the Wayne Tower balcony.
Though the two seem unlikely to form a serious relationship, the chemistry between Ruby Rose and Christina Wolfe is some of the strongest in the series and their flirtatious banter adds great levity to the show, which awards them bonus points. Points lost, however, for not casting a half-black actress for Pennyworth, as is canon in the comics.
3 Luke Fox and Mary Hamilton
An ember that seems poised to burst into a flame, Luke and Mary's budding relationship has been merely hinted at thus far on the series, but fans have been quick to jump on this ship. On paper, the two seem perfectly matched as a whip-smart tech specialist and an underground surgical whiz, and Mary emotionally supporting Luke through the new trial of his father's killer was a sweet moment that solidified them as a strong pair. Luke even pretends to be her boyfriend at a nightclub to lure her away from an overzealous fan.
The possibility of an electric romance blossoming between the two seems more than plausible, and audiences are eager to see how their connection evolves through the back half of season one as Mary - most likely - slinks her way into the Batwoman circle.
2 Kate Kane and Sophie Moore
Likely the most popular and fleshed-out romance on the series, Kate and Sophie have had a tumultuous relationship spanning the years, after the two partook in a forbidden romance at Point Rock Academy that ultimately ended in a heartbreaking separation. When Kate returned to Gotham years later after finding out Sophie was in danger, audiences immediately saw the two still had major chemistry and unresolved feelings. Even when Sophie told Kate to move on, it was clear she was still Kate's shoulder to lean on, and vice versa. Sophie loves powerful women, and Kate is just that.
The will-they/won't-they continues with these two, as their complicated history seems to get in the way of their future. But there's still a flame flickering here on both sides, and if we were to name one couple as endgame, it would be Kate and Sophie.
1 Batwoman and Sophie Moore
Though Kate Kane is Batwoman, Sophie isn't yet aware of that fact and began a romance with Batwoman under the guise of her being another person entirely. As such, it's worthwhile to separate their romance on this list. Batwoman and Sophie's chemistry sizzled throughout the first season, culminating in hushed back ally meet-ups, shared secrets, and a passionate rooftop kiss. Audiences found plenty to root for as Sophie risked her career to work with Batwoman and keep Gotham safe.
Though their romance was fleeting and the couple ended due to Batwoman's desire to see Sophie live authentically (and out in the open), fans still see plenty of chemistry between the crime-fighting duo and some kind of reconciliation seems inevitable - though things will likely get messy when Sophie finds out that Batwoman's true identity is her long-lost ex-girlfriend, Kate.
