Due to the coronavirus outbreak, studios are starting to delay movies, with No Time to Die being pushed back seven months - so what other movies could potentially see delays? Before No Time to Die was pushed back, Hollywood was already impacted by the coronavirus; premieres were being canceled, foreign releases being pushed back, and productions being shutdown in some cities.
Now with the virus spreading in the United States and Europe - markets are that hugely important to a movie's performance - it makes sense that studios would consider pushing back release dates. Considering that it's recommended to avoid public areas or places with dense crowds, movie theaters are at risk of closing down in some areas - they already have in China, after all.
With that in mind, No Time to Die may just be the first in a line of films receiving delays. In particular, there are three titles set for release in the next two months that seem especially likely to be pushed back, one of which is a project no stranger to noteworthy release date changes.
Considering it was supposed to originally open on April 13, 2018, The New Mutants has already experienced its fair share of delays. However, it could be in for yet another hold-up thanks to coronavirus. This virus is currently affecting overseas markets, and The New Mutants would need as much box office power around the world as it can get. Currently scheduled for release just one week prior to No Time to Die's original release date, Disney/20th Century Studios might opt to delay New Mutants one more time in the wake of the virus' impact on movie theaters.
Even the mighty Marvel Cinematic Universe behemoth might not be able to stand up to the effects of the coronavirus. The franchise's newest entry, Black Widow, is currently set for release on May 1, 2020, but that could change in the wake of this health scare and especially its impact on foreign countries. Given how many overseas markets (chiefly China) have proven crucial to the MCU's box office success, it might be impacted by China's theaters being closed. Admittedly, a lot could happen in the two months between now and Black Widow's current release to ensure its box office success in May 2020. However, at this juncture, it's possible Black Widow could be pushed back.
Though it's the farthest out film on this list (it's currently slated for release on May 22, 2020), the fact that the coronavirus outbreak has no end in sight means that Fast & Furious 9 won't be exempt from how this virus impacts movie releases. Given that the recent Fast & Furious movies have been outright juggernauts at the foreign box office, a release date delay could be in the cards to ensure that F9 has a chance to match the box office heights of its predecessors. To boot, F9 is being distributed by Universal, the studio in charge of No Time to Die's foreign release. If Universal decided Bond needed to be delayed, who's to say they won't make the same call with Dominic Toretto's newest adventure?
