Y: The Last Man Show Suffers Another Setback As Lead Actor Exits

Written by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, the comic book series ran for 60 issues from 2002 to 2008 under Vertigo, a now-defunct imprint of DC Comics. The series follows Yorick, the last surviving male in a post-apocalyptic world where everyone with a Y chromosome has died from a mysterious plague. Other than his resistance to the biological threat that took out half the population of the planet, Yorrick doesn't have superpowers, but he does have a pet monkey named Ampersand, played on the FX series by a live monkey.Related: Peta Slams Y: The Last Man TV Show For Using Real Monkey As Ampersand

Collider confirmed Keoghan has left the series, but neither he nor FX has announced a reason for his departure. Keoghan was supposed to star alongside a stellar female cast that includes Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, Amber Tamblyn, and Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel). At a press tour for the Television Critics Association in February 2019, FX announced would premier sometime in 2020, but the exit of the show's lead actor could impact the intended release date significantly. If the production already shot footage with Keoghan as Yorrick, there may be massive reshoots on the horizon.

The reasons behind Keoghan's departure are currently unknown, but his role in the upcoming Marvel Studios ensemble film The Eternals may play a part in his unexpected exit. The Eternals recently wrapped filming, but perhaps Keoghan had to pull out of Y due to scheduling conflicts, as the publicity tour for promoting Marvel movies can last for months. Marvel films are also famous for adding reshoots to their production schedules, which also could account for Keoghan's sudden departure. Moreover, given the frequency of surprise cameos in Marvel films, Keoghan’s contract may have prevented him from committing to a full-time role in Y.

The road to a live-action Y: The Last Man has been a bumpy one. New Line Cinema spent years developing a film adaptation of the Eisner-award winning series that never materialized. Success for a television version looked promising when FX announced Lane, Poots, and Lynch had joined the cast in 2018. However, original showrunners Aïda Mashaka Croal and Michael Green left a year later due to creative differences, saying they hoped the Network would develop “a show that had something to say, in a time when things must be said.” Y's current showrunner, Eliza Clark (Animal Kingdom), joined the series a few months later. "A decade ago I devoured the complete Y: The Last Man series cover to cover, imagining how it might take shape on screen," Clark said at the time. "I'm thrilled to tell this story and to be working with this immensely talented cast." Hopefully, Yorrick will be quickly recast, and Clark will get a chance to realize her vision.Next: The Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2020
