Vikings has been around for so long that it’s hard to image other actors playing some of the series’ most memorable characters, such as Ragnar Lothbrok, Rollo, and Floki, but as it happens with all TV shows, things could have been very different had everything gone according to the actors’ plans. Such is the case of Vikings’ former lead, Travis Fimmel, who is now known for playing Ragnar, but originally wanted to play someone different, yet very close to the legendary Viking leader.
Created by Michael Hirst, Vikings debuted on History Channel in 2013, and even though it was originally planned as a miniseries, it was quickly renewed for a second season. The series initially followed the travels of Norse figure (who might or might have not been real) Ragnar Lothbrok and his Viking brothers. As the series progressed, it shifted its focus to Ragnar’s sons and their own travels, making them the protagonists. Ragnar met his fate in season 4, but the series continued its curse and is now in its sixth and final season.
Vikings is currently on a break as it reached its midseason finale, and it’s a good moment to look back at those characters and events that made the final season possible. The series has a lot to thank Ragnar and Travis Fimmel for, and it might be a bit shocking for fans to learn that Fimmel’s original plans were different, as he wasn’t going after the role of Ragnar.
Vikings wasted no time in introducing those characters close to Ragnar, most notably his wife Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), his brother Rollo (Clive Standen), and his best friend and boat builder Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård). The latter stood out for his eccentric and joyful personality and for playing the role of trickster among the group – all of which served as cover for an emotionally troubled man. Although both Ragnar and Floki have very interesting stories and have served different purposes in the series, Fimmel was originally interested in playing Floki.
Speaking to The Wrap in 2017, Fimmel revealed that he wanted to play Floki, but when he arrived, Gustaf Skarsgård was already cast, adding that “he did it way better” than he could ever do it. In the end, everything turned out well for both Skarsgård and Fimmel, as they got to play characters that boosted their careers and that complemented each other quite well – the chemistry between them was undeniable, and it was a complex relationship, like most in the series. While it’s fun to imagine what Fimmel would have looked like as Floki (and, just for fun, Skarsgård as Ragnar), Vikings definitely wouldn’t have been the same without him as the lead Viking.
