Sonic the Hedgehog tie-in merchandise was modeled after the controversial original character design, not the redesign seen in the finished film. Sonic hit theaters and eclipsed expectations by breaking the opening weekend box office record for a video game movie. However, the film wasn't always destined for success.
Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the greatest success stories regarding online buzz. When the original design leaked online (and even after it was officially revealed), fans were taken aback by the poor design choices. The film certainly received plenty of recognition at that point, but not the kind Paramount was looking for. When a film's trailer has many more dislikes than likes on YouTube, something probably went wrong. In a surprise move, Paramount delayed the film to redesign the title character. That decision seems to be paying off; Upon release, Sonic has received a favorable reception from fans, earning an "A" CinemaScore. It is rare to see social media buzz go from heavy criticism to high praise. With the film teasing a sequel, fans are happy it is doing well. Despite Paramount likely wanting everyone to forget about the old look, it lives on.
As with many films, Sonic the Hedgehog has received toy tie-ins. Unfortunately, some of the toys are based on the original design (via CinemaBlend), instead of the updated look. A seven-piece toy set featuring a "Spin Dash Sonic," and an 8-inch plush, both retain the oddly-shaped snout and legs of the original Sonic design. Jakks Pacific, known by video game fans for the World of Nintendo line, produced the toys based on outdated character models. Both items are available at online retailers like Target and Entertainment Earth.
Oddly enough, the packaging on the Spin Dash Sonic features the updated movie design. However, it is important to remember Jakks Pacific was well into production on the toys while Sonic the Hedgehog was still filming. Paramount had no intention of redesigning the character up until the mass feedback it received on the trailer, long after manufacturers had already begun to work.
Before Sonic the Hedgehog's release, voice actor Ben Schwartz said it's up to the fans if a sequel is put into development. So far, the fans have answered by seeing the movie in droves. It seems likely Paramount will announce a sequel, but that remains to be confirmed. The studio may be waiting to see how it does long-term at the box office. A good opening doesn't necessarily mean it will be a success down the road. Time will tell.
