During tonight's Super Bowl LIV, Universal Pictures released the first TV spot for Minions: The Rise of Gru. The upcoming animated film is the sequel to the commercially successful first film, Minions, which debuted in 2015. The Minions films themselves are a spinoff of the Despicable Me franchise, which focuses on the supervillain-turned-dad Gru (Steve Carell), his Minion sidekicks, and his three adopted daughters. There have been three Despicable Me movies so far, with the Minions films taking place before the series.
The first Minions movie revealed the creatures' origin on Earth and focuses on their first villain boss, Scarlet Overkill (Sandra Bullock). They first meet Scarlet at Villain-Con and wind up teaming with her and her husband, Herb (Jon Hamm). However, their relationship eventually goes sour, leaving the Minions in search of a new boss. The end of the film showed the Minions' first interaction with Gru, as he bested the Overkills and fled the scene. The sequel will focus on Gru's journey to becoming a supervillain and his early relationship with the Minions. It will be released this July.
