How I Met Your Mother Theory: Lily Was Related To Buzz Aldrin (Seriously)

A fun fan theory suggests that Lily Aldrin from How I Met Your Mother was related to legendary astronaut, Buzz Aldrin. The character, played by Alyson Hannigan (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), served as one of the core characters throughout the sitcom's nine seasons. Lily was one of Ted Mosby's best friends and ended up marrying and starting a family with Marshall Eriksen. Here's an explanation into the interesting theory and all of the evidence that Buzz was Lily's maternal grandfather.

Unlike her other friends, Lily grew up in New York City, which made her more comfortable living there after graduating college. Flashbacks explained how she met Ted and Marshall, but they also gave insight into Lily's life as a child. She had a feminist mother, who worked multiple jobs, and a stay at home dad, Mickey. A few other members of Lily's family made appearances on the series, including some of her grandparents. The only one who didn't make a cameo was her grandfather from her mom's side of the family.

According to the How I Met Your Mother theory (via Reddit), Buzz Aldrin was Lily's biological grandfather. The most obvious piece of evidence would be the shared last names, but the theory goes much deeper than that.  The sitcom's creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, have stated that there's no reason to believe the character wasn't intended to be related to Buzz Aldrin, but they never confirmed whether or not the theory was true. That said, the series featured interesting evidence to support the notion that Lily was related to a famous astronaut.

Buzz Aldrin grew up in a New Jersey town not far from New York City, so it wouldn't be surprising if some of his family resided in the Big Apple. In the season 2 episode "Bachelor Party," viewers met some of Lily's family, including her grandmother, Lois. Not only was Buzz married to a woman named Lois Driggs Cannon when this episode aired, but the character mentioned that her husband served in the Korean War. Buzz, of course, was a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War before working for NASA.

Lois was actually Buzz's third wife, making this woman Lily's step-grandmother. Her biological grandmother would have been a woman named Joan Ann Archer. The real-life woman had three children with Buzz, including a daughter named Janice Aldrin, the same name as Lily's mother in How I Met Your Mother. It would have been expected for the Aldrin name to come from Lily's dad, but that might not be the case.

As previously mentioned, Lily's mom was a feminist and had progressive thoughts when it came to gender roles. It's very possible that when Janice and Mickey got married, the couple took the Aldrin name as a non-traditional tactic to fight gender norms. When Lily married Marshall, she also didn't want to take his last name, so this could have been influenced by her mother. Now Lily's paternal grandparents, Morris and Rita, appeared in How I Met Your Mother and they were thought to carry the last name of Aldrin. This might have just been an assumption since the Buzz Aldrin connection seemed more than a coincidence. The minds behind the series surely tossed in these details as a fun nod to the character's namesake.
