Apex Legends Original Map Kings Canyon Returns For A Limited Time

For this weekend only, Respawn's hit battle royale game Apex Legends is letting players jump back into the game's original map, Kings Canyon. Since its release in February 2019, Apex Legends has been known to some as a Fortnite competitor, as both are hugely popular battle royale games with seasonal content to keep players coming back. Apex Legends new seasons typically unveil new characters to play as, skins to unlock, and tweaks to the map. Notably in October 2019, a new map, World's Edge, was one of the big reveals for Season 3. Since then, players have no longer been able to skydive into Kings Canyon except during the limited-time events Fight or Fright and Grand Soirée Arcade.

It's worth noting that Kings Canyon has undergone some transformations since Apex Legends first launched. In Season 2, a fictional disaster left some areas destroyed, while flyers roamed the skies above contestants battling it out on the ground. At the same time, other new locations sprung up to subtly change the game. The biggest addition was the six-story Cage filled with supplies, perhaps built to attract combatants in need of loot and, as a result, encourage close-quarter shootouts earlier in the match. Other companies have taken note of Respawn's success, with even Rainbow Six Siege adopting an Apex Legends-style pinging system.

Starting Friday, February 21, and running through Monday, February 24, Kings Canyon is making a comeback in Apex Legends, according to the official Apex Legends Twitter account. World's Edge isn't going anywhere, though. Instead, players will be able to jump into either map over the weekend. Check out the developer's announcement, along with a short video reminding players what the game used to look like, below:

Long-time fans of Apex Legends are likely to enjoy the nostalgia of returning to the game's first map, which looks to be the original version of the map from Season 1. Besides that, both new and old Apex Legends players can tire of returning to the same map over and over, especially after playing multiple back-to-back sessions. Being able to choose between two maps offers a refreshing change for those in need of new scenery for their shootouts.

Respawn likely sees the value of having multiple maps in the game as a way to keep players coming back, as evidenced from their plan to split modes across two maps during the second half of Apex Legends Season 4. Beginning in late March, the game's Ranked playlist specifically will only be available on the Kings Canyon map. The fact that Kings Canyon has always been a fan favorite may be behind this move, but one test will be seeing how the game's huge player base divides between the two maps. If this two-map split works out, it could encourage Respawn to give Apex Legends players multiple map options permanently in the future.
