Sebastian Stan has definitely had some amazing and memorable roles with Bucky Barnes (aka Winter Soldier) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe being probably the most iconic one, even though we don't know everything about him yet.
Nevertheless, it is important to recognize his other great performances as he seems to be both good-looking and talented at the same time. Here are 10 best Sebastian Stan movies, according to IMDb.
10 71 Fragmente einer Chronologie des Zuffals (1994) - 7.2
While most of this list is dominated by Marvel movies, 71 Fragments of a Chronology of a Chance stands out both because of its origins (it is an Austrian film) and because of what it is about. Basically, this drama is made up of 71 "fragments" or scenes that focus on several separate storylines that intersect at the end of the film.
Sebastian Stan's role here is quite small. In fact, he is credited as "Kid in Subway," so there is not much to see of him. He was only twelve years old when the film was released. It was also his first acting role outside of school and camp stage productions.
9 Ant-Man (2015) - 7.3
Those who have seen the Ant-Man movies are probably surprised to see 2015's film on this list. After all, the Winter Soldier has nothing to do with Scott Lang's story. However, you will notice that Bucky Barnes, played by Sebastian Stan, has been in several post-credit scenes that Marvel loves so much, which makes him a cast member of these films.
The post-credit scene in the first Ant-Man movie sets up Captain America: Civil War and actually shows a scene which then appears in that movie: Bucky's metal arm is fixed in one place, so he can't escape, while Steve and Sam are discussing what they should do next and how they must act in their difficult situation.
8 Black Panther (2018) - 7.3
Another movie with a post-credit scene that has Bucky in it is the one in Black Panther which birthed the meme of Bucky looking like Jesus. In the scene, Bucky wakes up in Wakanda somewhere in the jungle in a small makeshift house and Shuri welcomes him as he exits the house to look at what is around him.
There is also a funny story connected to this role of Stan's. He was on his phone with his mother after she had seen the movie, but she couldn't understand why she didn't see him in it. It turns out that she left the cinema before the credits ended, so she had no idea that her son was in the post-credit scene.
7 I, Tonya (2017) - 7.5
This is perhaps one of the most underrated roles of Sebastian Stan, mostly because his role in the MCU outshines it. I, Tonya is a 2017 film starring Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, and Allison Janney (with Robbie and Janney being nominated on multiple awards including Golden Globes and Academy Awards, but only Janney winning most of them).
This biopic tells the story of the figure skater Tonya Harding, the first American woman and the second woman in the world to successfully land a triple axel in competition. Robbie plays Tonya, Janney plays her abusive mother LaVona, and Stan plays Tonya's ex-husband Jeff Gillooly who was reportedly responsible for the attack on Harding's rival Nancy Kerrigan.
6 Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - 7.7
While Bucky Barnes first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger, this is the movie that actually made him the star of the show - or rather the star of the MCU. Some fans might even remember Sebastian Stan's iconic appearance at the premiere of the film where he was asked why he was there and Stan replied that he died in the first movie and he was only attending "for support".
Of course, there was no way Marvel could hide his importance. They named the film after the character, created posters for him, and then gave him an almost equally important role in Captain America: Civil War. It's also worth noting that Stan doesn't have many lines in this movie, yet he manages to steal the show.
5 Captain America: Civil War (2016) - 7.8
Another creation by the Russo brothers (who also worked on Captain America: Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame), Captain America: Civil War is by far one of the best movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bucky gets more character development, but he is not entirely the center of attention.
One of the best things about Bucky's storyline here is that he gets to interact with many other characters as Bucky, rather than Winter Soldier. He also becomes extremely important to the conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark with fans still debating whether or not Bucky is a villain.
4 The Martian (2015) - 8.0
Though the main protagonist of The Martian is Matt Damon's character, other astronauts and members of the spaceship crew still get some screentime. Stan's character, Dr. Chris Beck, is an astronaut who is also a flight surgeon for the Ares III mission. That being said, his role mostly consists of looking good and helping his team.
Nevertheless, The Martian is considered one of the best sci-fi movies about space in the past two decades. It's not Interstellar, but it is fun and entertaining to watch while also being visually beautiful and dramatically coherent. It also got multiple nominations at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and even Academy Awards.
3 Black Swan (2010) - 8.0
Black Swan is another project that didn't have Sebastian Stan in the main role but was extremely successful nonetheless. Darren Aronofsky created a tight psychological thriller that is still considered one of the best horror films of the twenty-first century, and it's totally understandable why (five Academy Award nominations, for instance).
Natalie Portman plays the main role of a young ballerina competing for the main role in a ballet production of Tchaikovsky's "Black Swan" as she gradually loses her grip on reality. Stan appears in one of the scenes as Andrew, one of the two suitors in a nightclub who spends time with Portman's character Nina and her friend Lily played by Mila Kunis.
2 Avengers: Infinity War (2018) - 8.5
Like many other characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bucky was present in Avengers: Infinity War and then Avengers: Endgame. And just like most other characters, he didn't actually get much screentime.
That being said, Bucky's death scene was probably remembered by all the fans because of how hard the realization hit Bucky and Steve when they realized what was going on (besides, Steve seems to be touching Bucky's ash after the snap).
1 Avengers: Endgame (2019) - 8.5
There were some negative sides to how Bucky was portrayed both in Infinity War and in Endgame. Though both Winter Soldier and Civil War demonstrated his fighting skills, the two later movies had him reduced to using only guns.
Many viewers also didn't like the fact that Steve left Bucky in the present, despite fighting for his friend for such a long time. Nevertheless, we will soon see the amazing duo of Bucky and Sam in the upcoming The Falcon and Winter Soldier Disney+ series.
