WWE: Drew McIntyre Wins Men's Royal Rumble, Heads to WrestleMania

Drew McIntyre has won WWE's 2020 Royal Rumble event, eliminating Roman Reigns to earn a title match of his choosing at this year's WrestleMania. The Royal Rumble is one of WWE's "Big 4" pay-per-views and kicks off the build-up to WrestleMania, the biggest wrestling event of the year. The titular match involves 30 wrestlers entering the ring in 90-second intervals and fighting to be the last competitor standing. Wrestlers are eliminated when they are thrown over the top rope and both feet hit the floor. Since 2018, there has also been a women's Royal Rumble match.

A highlight of the wrestling calendar, Royal Rumble is anticipated and beloved for the endurance of the wrestlers and the possibility of surprise entrants and shock returns; this year was no different as legendary Adam "Edge" Copeland returned after a nine-year absence from the ring. This year, WWE Champion Brock Lesnar entered himself at number 1 in order to prove his worth, or rather, the lack of worth of his competitors.

Via the official results from WWE, Drew McIntyre secured his WrestleMania bout after eliminating Lesnar with his finisher, the Claymore Kick. Lesnar had eliminated 13 wrestlers, most of them with ease, tying a record set by Braun Strowman in the process. Lesnar's complete dominance over popular wrestlers such as Kofi Kingston, Shinsuke Nakamura, and CM Punk's pick Keith Lee led to complaints and dismissal from fans on social media until McIntyre's decisive Claymore.

In the other Royal Rumble match, Charlotte Flair defeated NXT star Shayna Baszler to win the third Women's Royal Rumble. The rest of the Pay-Per-View included Bray Wyatt as "The Fiend" retaining his Universal Title against Daniel Bryan in a strap match, Becky Lynch retaining her Raw Women's Championship against Asuka, and Roman Reigns defeating Baron Corbin in a Falls Count Anywhere match. McIntyre, somewhat of a surprise winner, also used his Claymore Kick to help eliminate Reigns after the latter had thrown out the returning Edge.

McIntyre's win helped end this year's Royal Rumble on a positive note amid pre-show concerns that Brock Lesnar could end up winning the whole thing, something that the criticism during his dominant period shows would not have been a popular decision. Roman Reigns, another controversial option, was also seen as a favorite. Many might have feared a repeat of the 2015 Royal Rumble winner when it came down to Reigns and McIntyre, but the Scot prevailed and potentially set up a mouthwatering clash with Lesnar when WrestleMania comes to Tampa.
