Wolverine is one of Marvel's most popular characters, which has been showcased over the years by his placement on almost every team that was created for a period of time. This has put Logan alongside some of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe, as well as some of its strongest personalities.
Wolverine himself isn't exactly an easy character to get close to, but he has also managed to earn the respect of most of his peers due to his loyalty to his friends and his unwavering dedication to his mission. Unfortunately, some heroes still just can't stand Wolverine, so today we are going to take a closer look at some of his best bubs and worst frenemies.
10 RESPECT HIM: ELEKTRA
Like Wolverine, Elektra isn't winning any awards for the most sociable hero, especially since she herself is more of an anti-hero/assassin, depending on which line of the moral boundary she's walking on that day. However, her interactions with Wolverine have always come with a great sense of honor and respect between the two characters.
So much so that when Wolverine had devolved into a more bestial form after Magneto removed his adamantium during the "Fatal Attraction" storyline, Elektra helped guide him back to his former noble samurai warrior self, though it was ultimately Apocalypse who reversed his feral mutation and rebonded him with adamantium.
9 DESPISE HIM: THING
Ben Grimm may be the everlovin' blue-eyed Thing to his fans and his Aunt Petunia, but he is also a fighter with a quick temper that has often gotten the superstrong member of the Fantastic Four in some serious scrapes with members of the Marvel Universe like the Hulk and Wolverine.
While Logan and Ben play nice and can often be seen in a game of poker with other Marvel heroes, there is history between the two characters. During a fight between the two, Wolverine lost control and slashed Ben across the face, scarring his features and forcing him to wear a helmet while he recovered. Thing punched him through a few walls in retaliation but the damage was done.
8 RESPECT HIM: CAPTAIN AMERICA
It makes sense that Wolverine and Captain America would have a respectful relationship considering they have quite a lot in common, as they were both experimented on by the government as part of the Weapon Plus program, and they are both from different generations, with Logan living through the years Cap was asleep in the ice.
However, despite their shared experiences, Cap was initially put off by Wolverine's violent nature and history as a killer, so much so that he argued against Wolverine's inclusion with the New Avengers, though he would soon join the team and the two heroes would develop a lasting respect for each other as they learned more about their connection.
7 DESPISE HIM: NAMOR
Of course, Wolverine doesn't get along with everyone from Captain America's time period, as he frequently comes into conflict with Namor, the Sub-Mariner. Marvel's King of Atlantis is actually a mutant himself, considered one of the first, so he has found himself working alongside the X-Men in recent years.
Despite this relationship between mutants and teammates, Wolverine and Namor have never really gotten along, and almost always come to blows, even when one is looking to the other for help. Whether it's because of a clash of egos or differences/similarities in their personalities, Namor and Logan will never be each other's best friend.
6 RESPECT HIM: BLACK WIDOW
While Wolverine has worked with the X-Men, the Avengers, and even the Fantastic Four as a superhero for years, there was a time before Marvel's "Age of Heroes" that Logan worked for the government (both Canadian and U.S.) as a spy and later with the C.I.A. black ops group known as Team X with other members like Sabretooth and Maverick.
His work in the wars and with Team X frequently brought him into confrontations with Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow while she worked for the KGB and later as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. The two shared a deep friendship from before their lives as Avengers, and their mutual respect has led them to become trusted confidantes of each other's secrets, along with Nick Fury.
5 DESPISE HIM: PUNISHER
Another of Marvel's popular anti-heroes is Frank Castle/The Punisher, who has dedicated his life to a mission of vengeance against the criminal element that cost him his family. As the Punisher he frequently crosses paths with Marvel's heroes though rarely joins in on their larger scale battles.
As Wolverine often works in the same seedy circles as Punisher, the two have crossed paths a number of times, and work together well if their goals are aligned. But as we've seen many times, when Wolverine places himself in Frank's path, the Punisher isn't afraid to hold back and hit the regenerative mutant where it hurts.
4 RESPECT HIM: VENOM
While it might seem like Wolverine and Venom despise each other given the number of times they have fought one another over the years, it was recently revealed in a Venom annual that Eddie Brock owes Logan for putting him on the path towards becoming a Lethal Protector.
The issue flashed back to one of the earliest meetings between the two after Wolverine had quickly and efficiently carved Brock up during the encounter. Logan relates how Professor Charles Xavier once gave a monster like him a chance to be better, and that he was now giving Venom that very same chance, beginning Brock's heroic turn while also earning his respect.
3 DESPISE HIM: SQUIRREL GIRL
Okay, so despise might be a bit of a strong term here, but as we've seen in the pages of New Avengers, a history exists between Doreen Green and Logan that hasn't left their relationship in great shape. This was revealed during a sparring match between Logan and Squirrel Girl, who had started working for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones as the nanny of their baby, Danielle Cage.
The two exchanged initially playful taunts that suggested their shared history, but the battle soon turned fierce, and when Squirrel Girl took the win, Logan took a cheap shot and punched her when she wasn't looking. Squirrel Girl quickly retaliated with an army of squirrels, but it was clear there was no love lost between the two mutants.
2 RESPECT HIM: CYCLOPS
One of Wolverine's oldest rivals and the man he most frequently argues with is a fellow leader of the X-Men, Scott Summers/Cyclops. The two spent years fighting against each other as members of the X-Men, and more personally as they competed for Jean Grey's affection over the years.
However, despite all of their hardships and struggles as teammates over the years, the two have developed immense respect for each other that has made them into a finely-honed duo who instinctively know how the other will react in battle. Their respectful relationship has taken a further step thanks to recent "Dawn of X" revelations that dealt with some of their former issues.
1 DESPISE HIM: HULK
Wolverine's first appearance came when he was sent to deal with Hulk and Wendigo when the Green Goliath touched down on Canadian soil. This fight-filled first impression left a lasting mark on the two heroes, and the two have had a contentious relationship for years, especially when Bruce Banner isn't in control of the Hulk's body.
These continuing battles have continued to sour the Hulk's impression of Wolverine over the years and have led to many fateful confrontations between the two, though they have worked alongside each other with the Avengers and New Fantastic Four. In one hellish future, Hulk and his offspring were responsible for the death of Old Man Logan's family.
