Despite technically being an X-Men film, the extraordinary teenagers at the center of the long-awaited The New Mutants aren't at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and there's a reason for that. Initially set for release in 2018, The New Mutants found itself shuffled around after the Disney-Fox deal. When a long time passed with no updates on The New Mutants' release, fans wondered if the film would be shelved forever or if it might eventually find life on Disney+. Instead, their waiting paid off, and Disney settled on an April 3, 2020 release date. A second New Mutants trailer arrived in early January, assuring fans that this date will stick.
The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Magik, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Sunspot, and Blu Hunt as Mirage. From the first trailer, released way back in 2017, it was clear the film would have a different feel to it than typical comic book movies. The New Mutants is decidedly more of a thriller, with Disney's new marketing strategy backing it up. The story follows the five teenagers as they discover their abilities while trapped in a secret facility.
That secret facility is a far cry from Xavier's School, which X-Men fans are familiar with as being a haven for mutant teens and children. Instead, this facility, which in real life is Medfield State Hospital in Medfield, Massachusetts, is far more dangerous. During Screen Rant's visit to The New Mutants' set, director Josh Boone explained the reasoning behind the change in setting:
They're very much in a place that's like a psych hold for mutants who are too dangerous to be at the mansion. You know. I'd tell you more, but there's twists and turns and all that. But yeah, there's a doctor there who helps them and they do that stuff. Like I said, a little Girl Interrupted and Cukoo's Nest and a horror movie.
Plus, the film's set designer, Molly Hughes shared how it all came together:
We settled on here because, well, it's beautiful and it's isolated and we could have kind of the run of it. We did a lot of demolition to create our interiors because we couldn't just walk into our interiors and shoot them. Most of them were falling down. We kind of came here for the shell. I love the windows and the trees and the old red brick. It has that New England, Salam Witch Trials, possibly English, playing on the X-Mansion, kind of turning that on its head. That's how we ended up here.
Fans have waited a long time for this film, and expectations are certainly high now that things are moving again. The scary vibe seems promising, especially since Taylor-Joy promised New Mutants' tone is "unlike any tone I've seen on film." Considering just how many comic book movies there are right now, it's refreshing to see a director put a unique spin on things.
Regardless of whether it turns out to be good or bad, The New Mutants is one of the most exciting comic book movies of the year. Its creepy setting certainly sets it apart from other superhero films, and the fact that it's taken so long to reach the big screen gives it a hook that it wouldn't have had if it had been released on time. Anticipation has been building steadily, and as long as the final product sticks the landing even somewhat, Fox's final X-Men movie can be considered a success. It won't be long before fans can decide if The New Mutants was worth the wait.
