Suicide Squad 2: John Cena Provides Evidence For Popular Fan Theory

A recent interview with John Cena about his upcoming role in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad gives some hints about the possibility that a fan theory might come true in the movie. The Suicide Squad is not to be confused with the 2016 Suicide Squad movie written and directed by David Ayer, though the two are related. The Suicide Squad is both a soft reboot and a sequel to 2016's ensemble of misfit anti-heroes. Exactly how doing both of those at the same time will work is unclear, but there's a definitive lack of "2" in the title, which suggests that Gunn and DC Comics intend for the new entry to stand on its own legs .

Originally, Ayer was supposed to direct Suicide Squad 2, and the project was supposed to enter production in fall of 2018, but it fell through. Gunn, who had been fired from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, came on to write and then direct, around which time The Suicide Squad shifted from sequel to reboot. Most of the cast will be different, with only one major character returning as far as we know. This does mean a lot of fresh faces, however, and Cena is one of them, although he isn't saying exactly which character he's playing.

In an interview with Collider's Steven Weintraub, Cena sat down to speak about Gunn's writing and direction thus far and had a lot of praise to heap on him. However, the more interesting part of the interview might be a little hint Cena let slip about the structure of the movie. There has been a running fan theory that there will be two teams composing the Suicide Squad this time around: a first team that mostly dies during the mission and a second string sent in to try to pick up the pieces. Cena gives this some credence when speaking about the script. He said, “I was blown away. The first 10 pages [are] like a movie in itself. It’s really, really special."

Gunn has denied this fan theory already, but there keep being little hints in set photos for The Suicide Squad and interview comments. Fans may be onto something about the structure of this movie, and Cena just gave out confirmation that the early part of it will be somewhat self-contained as far as narrative. As production continues and the release date edges closer, there will be a lot more information about not only the details of the plot but also who Cena or anyone else is going to play, so stay tuned.

The Suicide Squad is supposed to have a 24-character ensemble cast, which may include some characters not directly on the eponymous squad itself. That's a lot of people to keep track of in a Hollywood script. The movie's tagline "Don't get too attached" is another hint that not every fresh face will make it through to the end of the movie, if the title alone wasn't enough of a suggestion.
