Star Wars may be about the love of family and friends at its core, but the saga has also always been defined by its romantic relationships, too. The prequel trilogy had the lukewarm romance between Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, and the sequel trilogy concluded with the slow burn enemies-to-lovers relationship between Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and Rey. But no couple could ever hold a candle to the original, and the most beloved: scoundrel Han Solo and princess Leia Organa.
Thanks to the tight writing of the sequel trilogy, the natural chemistry between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, and the epic romantic gestures and sacrifices these two make for each other, Han and Leia can rest safe in their position as the galaxy's most epic romance. Here, we take a look back at the couple's ten most memorable moments.
10 "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee."
All's fair in love and Star Wars, especially when two stubborn, independent people are having a hard time admitting their feelings for one another. In Empire Strikes Back, just as Han is preparing to leave the Rebellion, Han and Leia get in a heated argument with one another in the Rebel base on Hoth.
Han, certain of Leia's feelings for him, tries to goad a confession out of her, only further angering the stubborn-minded princess. When she snaps that she would "just as soon kiss a Wookiee," Han snarkily retorts, "I can arrange that. You could use a good kiss!" And the sparks fly.
9 "Don't get excited."
Few things increase romantic tension quite like unexpected physical contact between two people. When Han and Leia encounter some turbulence on the Millennium Falcon in Empire Strikes Back, that's exactly what happens.
Leia loses her balance and winds up in an all too eager Han's embrace, which is initially meant to keep her steady and help her regain her balance. But when their safety is ensured again, the banter resumes, with Leia assuring Han that "being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited."
8 "That's when I lost you both."
The Force Awakens surprised fans everywhere by revealing that Han and Leia were now an estranged married couple after all these years, with their distance spurred on by the turn of their son, Ben, to the dark side.
But in one of the couple's few scenes in the film, Leia and Han both make some painful admissions, regarding their failures both as parents and as spouses. In particular, Leia blames herself for not only sending their son away, but pushing Han away in the process.
7 "You have your moments."
In their adventure together on the Falcon in Empire Strikes Back, Han and Leia's relationship undergoes some significant development. After they've made their feelings for one another known, to some extent, the displays of affection between them only become all the more frequent - and all the more adorable, too.
After Han informs Leia that they can visit with his old friend Lando in Bespin, she finds herself briefly stunned by his character, warmly kissing him on the cheek in a quick, but no less sweet moment.
6 "That's why I did it. So you'd miss me."
The Force Awakens doesn't allot much time to the relationship between Han and Leia, but the few scenes the film does offer clearly depict a portrait of a couple who still deeply love one another, despite everything.
As Han readies to leave the Resistance base, Leia admits that no matter how much time they may have spent arguing as a married couple, she always had a hard time watching him leave her again. Han's cheeky response, an assurance that this was his exact goal every time he left, is entirely in character, but also all the more poignant when
5 "And then you're as good as gone, aren't you?"
Han and Leia may not spend much time in Cloud City, but their relationship and their level of comfort and vulnerability with one another makes many strides forward during their time there.
After getting comfortable in their quarters, Han comforts a worried Leia with a kiss on her forehead, before they have a brief, unguarded conversation regarding Han's intent to leave as soon as everything is repaired. Not much is said in this scene, but the way they look at each other, with equal parts pain and longing, says it all.
4 Hugging during the celebration on Endor
Another blink and you miss it moment just so happens to be one of the sweetest scenes this now full-fledged couple shares. In the final celebration on Endor at the end of Return of the Jedi, Han and Leia are finally afforded a rare moment of peace, joy, and comfort.
As the Ewoks and all their friends celebrate the final defeat of the Empire, Leia totally relaxes into Han's embrace, both of them smiling and sure of their love for one another.
3 "There aren't enough scoundrels in your life."
Few kisses in the history of cinema are as passionately adored, as beautifully scored, and as wonderfully acted as Han and Leia's first kiss on the Falcon. As both of them tease one another, about their true natures and the nature of their feelings, they come gradually closer and closer to each other.
Leia attempts to further deny her feelings, calling Han a scoundrel, and claiming she likes nice men. But when Han counters by saying she simply doesn't have enough scoundrels in her life, and kisses her soundly, well, how could she disagree?
2 "Someone who loves you."
Given how things ended for these young lovers at the end of Empire Strikes Back, there was certainly no guarantee that they would find their way back to each other. But they certainly do, and in truly memorable fashion, when Leia saves Han from the carbonite at the start of Return of the Jedi.
After entering Jabba's Palace under the guise of a bounty hunter, Leia reaches the destination of the room where Han is being stored, freeing him from his prison and unmasking herself as his hero - and "someone who loves you" - before the reunited lovers passionately embrace.
1 "I love you." "I know."
It just wouldn't be right if any other scene earned the top spot on this list. The dialogue exchange that has defined generations of fans, fiction, and much more, Han and Leia finally truly admit their feelings openly to each other when Han faces almost certain death at the end of Empire Strikes Back.
Leia, who has been struggling with the extent of her feelings for the entire film, finally takes the brave initiative to admit her love for him. And what more could Han have said, really, besides "I know"? He has known for the entire movie, after all. And so have we.
