Oscars 2020: 10 Excellent Diverse Films That Were Ignored Completely

The 92nd Academy Awards will premiere on February 9th, 2020. With a ton of amazing films being recognized, all movie buffs know that there are always also snubs. This year, there has definitely been some discussion over the inclusivity of the nominations. While not everyone can be nominated, there are unavoidably some films that have rubbed viewers the wrong way for being totally ignored. We can all love Bong Joon Ho's Korean film Parasite, but what other diverse films are out there? Here are 10 amazing (and eligible) films that are totally diverse and were also totally ignored by the Academy, along with their IMDb scores.

10 Pain and Glory

This movie did end up scoring two nominations, but it's safe to say that this flick deserved way more recognition. This Spanish drama is directed by Pedro Almodovar, and stars Antonio Banderas, Penelope Cruz, and many more talented and diverse Spanish actors. This movie follows a film director who reflects on his past and present as they both come crashing down. With a 7.6/10 on IMDb, this Spanish flick could, and should, have received many more nominations.

9 The Farewell

This movie stars Awkwafina and is directed by the brilliant Lulu Wang. This comedy-drama tells the story of a Chinese family who discovers their grandmother has a terminal illness. This movie is a stunning story of merging Western and Eastern ideologies and is still hilarious and wholesome. With a 7.7/10 on IMDb, this movie received no nominations, even though Awkwafina won a Golden Globe for this role. Not only does this movie have a female director, but this Asian flick definitely would have spiced up the competition, and totally deserves it.

8 Dolemite Is My Name

This biography comedy-drama is an incredible role performed by Eddie Murphy. He portrays the real-life legend, Rudy Ray Moore, who was a comedian and rapper who proved all his haters wrong with his hilarious alter ego—Dolemite. Taking place in the 1970s, this movie is fun, hilarious, and rich with culture. The cast does this story incredible justice, and this diverse flick scored a 7.3/10 on IMDb. For a musical and intriguing film experience, this movie deserved some Oscar nods.

7 Hotel Mumbai

This historical drama is directed by Anthony Maras and stars the incredible Dev Patel. This flick tells the true story of the Taj Hotel terrorist attack that occurred in Mumbai. The hotel staff are at risk, but they must keep everyone safe and make unthinkable sacrifices. This movie is an incredible and tragic tale and is certainly a story that is outside of North American culture. This movie also scored an impressive 7.6/10 on IMDb and certainly got snubbed during awards season this year.

6 Immortal Hero

A foreign film originating in Japan, this movie tells the story of a man who, after having a near-death experience, is inspired to choose life and change. This movie is severely underrated and unheard of, but managed  7.2/10 on IMDb with very few scores. This movie is genuine and inspiring and is certainly a foreign film that should be watched by all. While it was eligible for the Academy Awards, this movie goes unknown by far too many.

5 Just Mercy

This crime drama tells the infamous story of a world-renowned civil rights defense attorney, Bryan Stevenson. This movie follows one particular case where he must defend a wrongly condemned prisoner on death row. Starring Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Foxx, and Brie Larson, these three are brilliant at bringing these characters to life. Based on a true story of systemic racism, this movie deserved nominations for acting, screenplay, and more. With a 7.4/10 on IMDb, this popular film deserved some nods.

4 The Last Black Man in San Francisco

This drama tells the story of a young man who is searching for a home in his ever-changing city, feeling left behind. A pure and simple film, this flick stars Jimmie Fails and is directed by Joe Talbot. Starring an African-American cast, this drama is certainly honest and authentic and is a diverse film that certainly could have received a couple of nods by the Academy Awards this year. Plus, it even earned a 7.4/10 on IMDb. This underrated film deserves a much wider audience.

3 1982

This drama history film was created in Lebanon. During the 1982 invasion at a private school in Lebanon, this movie follows 11-year-old Wissam. He is trying to tell his classmate about his crush, and his teachers are struggling with their political divide and masked fears. With a 7.2/10 on IMDb, this movie is also underrated and unseen by many. For lovers of foreign films, or any exceptional biography drama, this is another diverse flick that certainly went unnoticed.

2 Uncut Gems

This movie probably had one of the biggest outcries for being snubbed at the Oscars. With a stellar performance by Adam Sandler, this Safdie Brother-directed film follows an NYC jeweler who must balance his family, business, and adversaries in order to pursue his ultimate greedy score. This movie has a strong focus on Sandler's Jewish heritage and also has a prominent plot that includes NBA player Kevin Garnett and singer The Weeknd. With a diverse cast with diverse backgrounds, this movie also scored a whopping 8.0/10 on IMDb and should be angry about being snubbed. It's also one of the most profound roles of Sandler's long and divisive career.

1 Waves

This drama/romance is an incredible tale of a suburban family's journey. Led by a domineering father, this family must navigate love after experiencing a devastating loss. Directed by Trey Edward Shults, this movie also stars Taylor Russell, Sterling K. Brown, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and many more talented and diverse actors. This inside look at an African-America suburban family is one that certainly went unnoticed. With a 7.8/10 on IMDb, it's unclear why.
