Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge Trailer Is Animated MK9

A new trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat animated film, Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, looks a lot like 2011's Mortal Kombat reboot. Coming to DVD, digital download, and Blu-Ray later this year, Mortal Kombat's first feature-length animated film boasts a striking visual style which looks at first glance to be a mix of the 1996 made-for-kids television show Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm (also known as Mortal Kombat: The Animated Series for readers outside the United States) combined with anime-style action scenes.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has been featured in two live-action films already, with a third currently in the works, but the release of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge will mark the first time the series has been displayed in a full-length animated movie, although many fans may argue the franchise's story mode, especially since the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot, effectively acts as a better Mortal Kombat movie than anything put to film so far. Netherrealm Studios' dedication to fleshed-out story modes is also on display in the fighting game's sister series, Injusticewhich features lengthy story modes filled with graphic novel-style twists and turns.

Now, thanks to IGN, players and fans have a little bit of a better idea of what to expect with the upcoming animated fighting game movie. The official trailer for Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, embedded below via YouTube, was released earlier today, and although the movie's title appears to indicate the story will focus mainly around Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon's favorite character the film appears to also once again re-tell the story of the first fateful Mortal Kombat tournament, albeit in the altered, revisionist context which it was show in 2011's Mortal Kombat 9.

With characters such as the sorcerer Quan Chi appearing in the Mortal Kombat Legacy: Scorpion's Revenge trailer, as well as series mainstays like Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, and Liu Kang, it's clear the film is once again rehashing the events which were first shown in the original Mortal Kombat game, repeated for the first live-action Mortal Kombat movie, given context in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero, and then once again revisited and revised in 2011's Mortal Kombat reboot, sometimes called Mortal Kombat 9.

By centering the focus of the story around Scorpion, sometimes known as Hanzo Hasashi, and the tragic loss of his family and clan, hopefully the upcoming animated Mortal Kombat film will be able to show events players have seen multiple times in a new context. If not, hopefully the animation and visual styles will be enough to keep the franchise's fans entertained, even if it does only end up rehashing all the same tired plot threads Mortal Kombat players have become used to.
