Friends: 10 Times Joey Proved He Wasn't So Dumb After All

Joey may have officially attested himself as "Baby Kangaroo Tribbiani," invented the word 'moo' for cows' opinion, and willingly destroyed his apartment... sorry, we mean "built an entertainment unit/mail cubby." (ouch, that one's painful). Joey may not be well-read. He may have skipped The Lord of The Rings for sex in high school. But he sure knew his way around many things. Using tools, making marinara sauce for hungry Italy, carpentry, raising a chick and a duck, giving advice, and knowing what single parenthood is like.

There are numerous instances in Friends with Joey's emotional intelligence. Here are ten times Joey proved he wasn't as dumb as he was made out to be.

10 Think About The Trail

In "The One With Morning After," it is revealed that Ross slept with the copy girl the night before. He feels guilty as soon as he hears Rachel's message about wanting to make up. Ross comes to Chandler and Joey for help. He doesn't know what to do next. Joey advises Ross to keep mum. He says they just have to make sure Rachel doesn't find out some other way.

Joey calls this a trail. The trail from the woman Ross had relations with, to the woman he hopes never finds out. You always have to think about the trail. Joey educates the Ross on something very critical and yet so sneaky.

9 Mayor Of Friendzone

Many credit Joey for coming up with the word "Friendzone." In "The One With The Blackout," and the rest of season one, Ross is smitten with Rachel. He hasn't made his move, it's been some time. Ross thinks he's achieved something with Rachel after having a friendly talk with her about life. Joey steps in to give him a reality check.

"It's never gonna happen," says Joey. Since Ross waited too long to make his move, he's in the friendzone. Joey calls him mayor of the zone. He tells Ross to ask out Rachel soon. Or, Ross would be stuck in the zone forever.

8 Knew A Handful Survival Tactics

In "The One With The Jellyfish," Monica narrates the story of what she did when she got stung by a Jellyfish on the beach. Monica was going to pass out from the pain, Joey remembered something. According to Joey, he'd seen this thing on the discovery channel. If you get stung by Jellyfish, the ammonia in the urine could kill the pain. Joey even suggested Monica use his dug up hole for privacy while peeing on herself.

Ross had seen it on Discovery Channel, too. Who knew Ross and Joey watched similar shows!

7 You Broke The Code

In "The One With Mrs. Bing," Ross and Chandler's mom share a brief kiss. Joey accidentally walks in on them. A disturbed Ross tells Joey that Chandler never needs to know what actually happened between Mrs. Bing and him. Whilst Ross says it isn't a big deal, Joey reminds him that something like that would be okay in the Bizarro world.

Joey tells Ross he broke the code. You don't kiss your friend's mom, sisters are okay, maybe a hot looking Aunt. Never mom!

6 Knocked Some Sense Into Chandler

In "The One With The Truth About London," we learn that Monica originally wanted to hook up with Joey. The revelation is made while Monica and Chandler narrated their experience of London to Joey. Phoebe ratted Monica out by saying, "Tell him who you actually wanted to hook up with that night in London." Chandler was pissed off after learning the truth. He decided Joey wouldn't do the wedding. Joey thus began his first of many attempts to knock some sense into Chandler.

"What? That's not fair. It's not my fault. I was off with my bridesmaid—and who's to say I would have even said yes? Chandler, look you are making way too big a deal out of this. Everything worked out okay."

5 Knew The Difference Between Love And Lust

Despite writing a stupid ceremony speech about loving and having and giving and receiving, Joey had a meaningful conversation with Chandler about love.

"Yeah, for like a half an hour one night! Chandler, she wants you for the rest of her life! You're so lucky! Look what I missed out on by not being there! Although, you know what? It could never have worked out like you guys did, 'cause you guys are perfect for each other. You know, we look at you and—and we see you together and it just... it—it fits. You know? And you just know it's gonna last forever.”

4 Knew The Challenges Of Single Parenthood

This is a perfect example of Joey's emotional intelligence. He had a lot of sisters, he was sensitive to their feelings. Joey proposed to Phoebe after learning she was pregnant in "The One With The Red Sweater."  Joey didn't want Phoebe and her child to be left alone, given how scary a world it is. He made quite a speech about it, too.

"It's a scary world out there, especially for a single mom. I've always felt that you and I have a special bond. So... Phoebe Buffay, will you marry me?" Joey did the same for Rachel when he found out she was actually the one who was pregnant.

3 Beat Monica At Her Turf

Remember the time Joey got a star? Remember the time head-chef Monica was forced to give Joey her star? Turns out, Joey was blessed with cooking skills. If only he'd pursued culinary arts instead of getting into the acting business.

In "The One With The Cooking Class," Monica's restaurant got a horrible review in The Post. Monica was humiliated, so she thought of going to see the restaurant reviewer in person. Joey accompanied her. While they were there, Monica stayed back to attend 'Introduction to Cooking'. Joey performed pretty well in the class, for a starter. His fettuccine Alfredo looked a little dry. But, Joey made delicious cookies, all by himself. He got an A and thought he was a dork!

2 First Know About Mondler

The first one to know Chandler and Monica's little secret was Joey. None amongst the highly intuitive woman, girls' best friend and roommate, and the girls' brother could do that. Joey was the first one to sense something was up between the two. In "The One With The Kips," Chandler and Monica sneak away for the weekend and called their trip short after a fight.

A suspicious Joey first thought Chandler was on a gay cruise. But, as everyone was seated in Monica's living room, two things quickly popped up which made him widen his eyes: Monica's missing eyelash curler and the fact that they both had seen Donald Trump in the elevator.

1 Warned Ross Not To Wear The Sweater

Joey tried to warn Ross before his date. In "The One With the Birthing Video," Ross had a date with Joan who worked for Hugo Boss. Ross accidentally wore Rachel's sweater on the date. He saw Joey before the date who asked him to get changed. It's amusing how Ross never read the label on the sweater. It is just one of the times when logic takes a hit on the show. Joey responded to Ross's accusation of being afraid of competition with the ladies with "looks like someone is the ladies!"
