Arrow star David Ramsey will appear on an upcoming episode of The Flash, but says he won't be suiting up as the Green Lantern just yet. Ramsey played John Diggle on Arrow for eight seasons, prior to the show's series finale. The character has appeared on The Flash six times before, so Diggle heading to visit Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) isn't unusual, but the final moments of Arrow's series finale teased fans with a twist that has potential to change John Diggle, forever.
As he prepares to pack up his house and move his family to Metropolis, a meteor crashes nearby. The impact throws him across his front yard, where he slams into the side of a van. Diggle recovers from the blow, and carefully approaches the mysterious box nestled in the crash site. He opens it up, it emits a bright green light, and then the scene ends. Arrow producers have been teasing a connection between Diggle, and DC Comics character the Green Lantern, since the show's second season. In the comics, one of the men to take on the Green Lantern mantel is named John Stewart, a black Marine veteran from Detroit who is selected to join the interstellar law enforcement agency known as the Green Lantern Corps. Arrow revealed that Diggle's stepfather's last name is Stewart, meaning, if he wanted to, John Diggle could call himself John Stewart when he does finally transform into the Green Lantern.
While all signs point to Diggle eventually becoming the Green Lantern at some point, the actor tells TVLine it won't happen on his February 4 guest spot on The Flash. “No, that doesn’t happen,” Ramsey states. “It is John Diggle over there as John Diggle, and we’re working on a case.” The episode marks the first time fans will see Diggle since the potentially life changing revelation at the end of the Arrow finale, but the character has other business to attend to.
“There’s a whole cast [of characters] over there that’s still recovering from Oliver’s death, and part of the connection to Oliver is Diggle, obviously," Ramsey tells TVLine. The actor also says his characters presence in the lives of Team Flash "serves as kind of a conduit, a way to grieve." Dealing with the loss of Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen isn't the only thing that brings Diggle from Star City to Flash's Coast City. "There’s something to solve… that Diggle’s a part of,” teases Ramsey.
Fans aren't going to see Diggle suit up just yet, but with a Green Lantern Corps series in the works, for new streaming service HBO Max, it's clear the character's journey is far from over. Ramsey certainly seems excited for the new show. He's kept in contact with Arrowverse executive producer Greg Berlanti about the project. "I've talked to Greg about it, and they have a great plan," the Arrow star recently said. In the meantime, it's obvious viewers haven't seen the last of John Diggle, but will have to wait a little longer to see Green Lantern.
