Marvel is just days away from giving Thor his biggest reboot in years, but the reason for his transformation may have just been revealed. The god of thunder's new, darker look isn't just cosmetic... it may be a reflection of his new role as the next herald of Galactus.
Fans need not worry about possible spoilers, since this is still speculation on our part. Incoming writer Donny Cates (Silver Surfer Black) told fans that there is a reason for Thor's new look -- and growing back his missing arm and eye -- that will be explained as the story runs its course. And as our preview of Thor #1 confirms, artist Nic Klein begins the new chapter drawing Thor as fans currently know him. So what changes? And how could Thor possible become MORE powerful? The new solicitation for Thor #4 may provide the answer.
Readers will actually get to enjoy not one, but two issues of the new Thor series in January. And no matter how his first issue ends, the official plot synopsis for Thor #2 reveals Thor will be scrambling to save the universe from a dark new threat:
THE BLACK WINTER AND THE DEVOURER KING! Before him lies the Black Winter; behind, a trail of death wrought by his own hand. The God of Thunder hurtles through the cosmos, searching for the power to save Asgard and all existence. But no power in the heavens can save a god – a king – from his bloody duty.
The teases continue into Thor #3, putting the longtime ally of Asgard Beta Ray Bill into the path of the Odinson, seeing how far Thor will go to complete "his bloody mission to save all that is." But with a cosmic menace unlike any other on its way, and Thor seeking any possible power to oppose it... the solicitation for Thor #4 couldn't drop a bigger twist. Coming from Cates and Klein in March, read the plot synopsis for yourselves:
THOR’S GREATEST ENEMY – AND THE UNIVERSE’S ONLY SAVIOR – REVEALED! The Black Winter is coming – the end of the entire vast universe – and only one entity can stop it. The only one who has survived it before, Galactus the World-Eater, has come to Midgard… in search of a herald for the end of everything.
Does this tease effectively confirm Thor will see the power cosmic, granted to every former herald of Galactus, as the boost needed to save the universe? Will the son of Odin finally prove himself worthy of the crown, only to sacrifice it to become servant to the World-Devourer? We'll let Olivier Coipel's breathtaking cover art for Thor #4 reveal our suspicions...
