Vikings is one of the most popular fantasy shows (probably after Game of Thrones). Part of its success is definitely the gorgeous hairstyles and the detailed outfits characters have, but the most interesting thing is definitely the love triangle between Ragnar, Lagertha, and Aslaug.
Fans are still speculating about who of the two women would have been better for Ragnar, but we might never get a clear answer considering that two of these characters are already dead. Nevertheless, here are 5 Reasons Ragnar Belonged With Lagertha (& 5 Aslaug Was Better For Him).
10 For Aslaug: He Was Instantly Attracted To Her
One of the most obvious reasons why Aslaug is more suitable for Ragnar is that he was instantly attracted to her (and she was to him). Of course, we don't know how Ragnar and Lagertha met, so they could have been instantly attracted to each other as well, but this argument is still valid.
Ragnar was intrigued when Aslaug appeared exactly how she was supposed to: "neither dressed nor undressed, neither hungry nor full, and neither in company nor alone." This proved her wit to him which he was more interested in than in her beauty.
9 For Lagertha: She Was His First Wife
Lagertha was Ragnar's first wife, nothing can really top the first marriage. She was Ragnar's first real love, and it seems that they had fallen out only because Ragnar wanted more children that Lagertha couldn't give him.
Nevertheless, it is almost impossible to call their marriage a failure. In fact, it was a long and happy one. It also had a huge impact on both of them even long after they had stopped being a husband and a wife.
8 For Aslaug: She Shared His Ambitions
Lagertha might have achieved a lot with time, but she was never really ambitious and preferred to be a simple farmer and part-time warrior rather than a queen. Aslaug, on the other hand, was completely different.
Aslaug always wanted to become a queen even though she already was a princess and a daughter of two legendary Vikings. When Ragnar was away for a long time, Aslaug had decided to overthrow him by marrying another influential man and becoming the ruler of even more lands. Such ambitions could only be proportionate to Ragnar's.
7 For Lagertha: They Respected Each Other
Ragnar and Lagertha had a special relationship. The two respected each other more than they probably respected anyone else. If you compare their interactions with the ones other couples have, you will quickly realize that it's different.
Ragnar saw all of the intelligence, beauty, and fighting skills Lagertha has while she saw these same things in Ragnar. They were attracted to each other primarily because of these things and their mutual respect for each other.
6 For Aslaug: They Stayed Married Longer
Even though we don't know the actual date when Lagertha and Ragnar married, we can judge Ragnar's two marriages by looking at his children. Bjorn was a teenager when Ragnar and Lagertha went different ways, but it was different with Aslaug.
Aslaug mothered four sons from Ragnar. All of them were already young men when Ragnar died ending their marriage. Of course, it's important to remember that Ragnar was absent for the majority of their teenage life, but that can be forgiven considering he would usually go on raids like other Vikings.
5 For Lagertha: They Had A More Lasting Connection
Even though Aslaug and Ragnar were married for a longer period of time, he and Lagertha had a more lasting connection. Even after they went their own ways, Ragnar and Lagertha would often remember the old days and even wish everything would be as it used to be.
Lagertha had helped Ragnar and she had helped her even after their marriage. They could still understand and respect each other even though Lagertha had initially felt offended when Ragnar decided to marry Aslaug.
4 For Aslaug: She Could Bear Him Children
It might not sound like the most romantic reason, but it was extremely important for Ragnar and was instrumental in his separation from Lagertha. Aslaug could and did bear him many children once Lagertha no longer could.
Ragnar believed the prophecy that his sons' glory would surpass his own. This is why he wanted to have more children than he already did with Lagertha, and Bjorn was not enough for him no matter how great of a son he was.
3 For Lagertha: They Had Bjorn Together
Nevertheless, Bjorn is still one of the most important reasons why Lagertha was more suitable for Ragnar. He was his firstborn, and a firstborn cannot be replaced by any other child more often than not and especially for Vikings.
Bjorn was Ragnar's favorite son who also seemed to be the one most similar to his father both physically and mentally. Yet, Ragnar seemed to prefer Ivar later on. To this day, however, Bjorn remains the brother most loved by fans.
2 For Aslaug: They Challenged Each Other Mentally
Even though Lagertha and Ragnar respected and admired each other's wit, Aslaug still seemed to be the one who challenged Ragnar more mentally. From their very first meeting, Ragnar was primarily looking at Aslaug's wit rather than her beauty or status.
Because of Aslaug's ambitions, her and Ragnar's interests would often clash causing them to have disagreements. However, this would sometimes cheer up Ragnar because it was a challenge for his mind and he viewed it as fun.
1 For Lagertha: They Understood Each Other
Perhaps the most important reason why Lagertha and Ragnar were perfect together is that they understood each other. Even though Ragnar wanted to go to other lands and Lagertha wanted to settle down, they understood each other even more than Ragnar and Rollo understood each other.
Ragnar knew when something was wrong with Lagertha, and she knew when something was wrong with him. They had their arguments, but they always made up afterward. In fact, you could even say that they were soulmates all along.
