The O.C. is remembered for a few different things: the over-the-top storylines, the cute couples, the musical montages set to songs by indie bands, and the 2000s fashion. Since the show was on the air for four seasons from 2003 to 2007, the characters wore some pretty interesting outfits.
While some items of clothing are pure 2000s fun and could be worn today, others should be left in teen TV drama past forever and never thought of again. And rich girl Marissa Cooper (played by Mischa Barton) had a knack for wearing some great outfits, along with some terrible ones. Here are Marissa's five best and five worst outfits on The O.C.
10 Best: Marissa's Green Dresses Are Great
Marissa Cooper looks great in both of these dresses and it seems that green is her color. In the photo on the left, she's in a slim green dress with gold polka dots that is really adorable, and in the photo on the right, she's got more of a Garden Party/fancy lady vibe going on. Sure, perhaps these dresses are a bit mature for a teenager, but this is a show where the characters act years beyond their actual age, so we'll forget about that.
The character has made some fashion mistakes, but these were good choices. She looks like the California girl that she is, ready to go to an elegant event and have a good time. Of course, since this is The O.C., drama was sure to follow (but at least she had a pretty dress on).
9 Worst: This Striped Sweater Is Strange
It's hard to imagine that anyone would ever want to wear this striped, colorful sweater. But, unfortunately, this is actually something that Marissa wore.
Pairing it with a bright red top and a pleated jean skirt? That wasn't the wisest decision, either, as nothing really looks good together here. The sweater is so loud and ugly that it would have stolen the attention and focus from whatever dramatic storyline was going on. It would be tough not to spend the entire scene thinking, "What is she wearing?!"
8 Best: This Look Is Really Cool
There is a side to Marissa Cooper that is a lot cooler than her wealthy teen girl status would seem to suggest. While she has Chanel purses and a bubbly best friend and seems boy crazy, she's also a fan of going to concerts and she loves On The Road. It's a great scene when Seth Cohen freaks out that they share the same favorite novel.
Marissa is letting her cool vibes show with this t-shirt and she added some curly hair, too. This is a great look for a concert and proves that even something as super casual as a t-shirt can be a huge fashion statement.
7 Worst: Marissa's Blazer And Skirt Combo
The 2000s was an awkward time for fashion because sometimes, people would put clothing together that just didn't work at all. In this case, Marissa Cooper wore a white blazer, purple t-shirt, and a skirt.
Besides being a dull and underwhelming outfit, it looks like the character couldn't decide if she wanted to dress up or dress down. The blazer suggests that she wanted to look professional and ready for the day ahead... but the t-shirt and skirt are much sloppier.
6 Best: What An Adorable Blue And White Polka Dot Dress
When she wasn't getting involved in a love triangle with Oliver (Taylor Handley) and Ryan (Ben McKenzie) or hanging out with her BFF Summer (Rachel Bilson), Marissa was busy making some great fashion choices. And this blue and white polka dot dress is definitely one of her best outfits on The O.C.
There's something sweet about it, and it feels like something that could still be found in many people's closets today. When a piece of clothing can move on from the awkward 2000s and endure, that's a good thing.
5 Worst: A Scarf Can't Save This Polo Shirt And Skirt
Is there a world where polo shirts are a good idea? Maybe... but maybe not. They take a certain person to pull them off, but pairing them with a scarf tied around your hair and a patterned skirt might not be the best way to go.
Even Marissa looks a bit confused in this scene about why she's wearing this outfit. It also feels like way too much green, especially since the polo shirt is a lime green and the green on her skirt is much darker. Let's not even get started on the yellow and blue bracelet, which feels like overkill in the accessories department.
4 Best: This Sparkly Green Dress Is Beautiful
Speaking of green... Now this is definitely one of Marissa's best outfits on The O.C. It takes a bold and brave TV character to be able to wear such a sparkly and fancy outfit, the kind of dress that is fit for a New Year's Eve bash but might look out of place at a regular birthday party.
Marissa is just spunky enough to pull it off and she looks amazing here. She's also wearing really pretty necklaces that complete the outfit.
3 Worst: When She Wore Awkward Skirts
If Marissa Cooper's personal style could be summed up in a few words, it would be "tops and skirts." She loves to wear short skirts but neither one of these is particularly flattering or fashionable.
In both of these cases, Marissa looks like she's wearing tops that are too small for her, and she doesn't look like the stylish California teen that she is. And the t-shirt in the photo on the right has a weird, ugly pattern.
2 Best: A Cute T-Shirt And Jeans Look
Marissa Cooper shines when she wears casual clothing because she always puts her stylish spin on it. In these photos, she's wearing a fun t-shirt with a cute necklace and jeans.
While some characters would look boring in a t-shirt and jeans, Marissa looks anything but dull. The t-shirt was a smart choice as it's got a more interesting pattern than if it was just a plain white top.
1 Worst: What A Confusing, Weird Sweater
Finally, here's Marissa Cooper's absolute worst outfit on The O.C. She wore a sweater that is grey in front and has patches of color and patterns on the sleeves, and if that wasn't terrible enough, she also wore a purple skirt.
This shade of purple can only be described as the color of Barney, so needless to say, it doesn't have a place in anyone's closet. This is definitely a forgettable outfit, and the fact that the character wore it to school is even more confusing.
