When she first got the call to join the cast of The Mandalorian, Gina Carano thought she was going to be playing a female Wookiee. Carano's character was recently introduced in the latest episode of The Mandalorian as Cara Dune, an ex-Rebel Shock Trooper who initially assumes The Mandalorian is on her planet because he is after her. Although the two eventually become friends and help save a small fishing village from local terrorizers, Carano's character does not end up leaving the planet with The Mandalorian, at least not yet, choosing instead to forge her own path.
As a former member of the Rebel Alliance, Cara Dune fought against the Empire in the Galactic Civil War, going as far as to tattoo a Rebel Alliance symbol underneath her left eye to make sure everyone she meets knows where her allegiances lie. Once the war was over and the job of soldier became one of peacekeeping and protecting politicians, she left the service and became a traveling mercenary, which is where she ran into The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda, the fifty year-old infant who has taken the internet by storm.
According to the actress herself in an interview with Vanity Fair, however, Gina Carano had no idea what she was getting into. "I thought I was going to be like the female Chewbacca," Carano said, describing how it felt to get the call for a job on The Mandalorian. "I was surprised to find that I was one of the few people that you were actually going to see her face."
Even though Episode 4 of The Mandalorian ended without Cara Dune joining up with The Mandalorian and his child companion, there are a number of reasons to suspect this isn't the end for the character. For one, in the same interview Carano not only mentions how incredible it is to be one of the few characters who get to show their face, but also "In a lot of scenes, sometimes the only face." Since most of Cara Dune's scenes in this first appearance were alongside other human characters, one has to wonder just what exactly she is referring to. Additionally, the interview confirms Carano is currently filming season two of The Mandalorian right now, meaning she will definitely show up again at some point.
The Mandalorian has done a good job of subverting their viewer's expectations so far when it comes to who is and who isn't a main character. Although featured heavily in the show's marketing before launch, the droid IG-11 was killed off by the end of the first episode, and the show's biggest pull, the adorable Baby Yoda character, wasn't mentioned at all. Only time will tell just how big of a role Carano is set to have in The Mandalorian moving forward, but in any case she's probably happy to not have to do all of those fight scenes in a big furry costume.
