While performing her sixth opening monologue for Saturday Night Live, it appears Scarlett Johansson, star of the upcoming Black Widow film, was visited by her old foe Thanos. Thanos was the villain of both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the latter of which saw Scarlett Johansson's longtime MCU character Black Widow sacrificing herself in order to recover one of the Infinity Stones and restore the fifty percent of the universe which had been turned to dust at the end of Infinity War.
Although the Black Widow character is dead in the current timeline of the MCU, a new film starring Scarlett Johansson's super-spy titled Black Widow is set to release in 2020. Taking place in the recent past and featuring Natasha Romanoff's former Russian spy family, Black Widow is set to feature the first introduction of Marvel Comics' Taskmaster villain and, as shown in the first Black Widow trailer, David Harbour's Red Guardian, who looks to be a communist version of Captain America.
Now, the Black Widow star has hosted Saturday Night Live for the sixth time, and during her opening monologue the cast began turning to dust in much the same way characters did at the end of Avengers: Endgame once Thanos snapped his Infinity Stone-powered fingers. Noted by the cast themselves as something of a dated reference, Scarlett Johansson pretended to be worried Thanos was returning while multiple SNL cast members around her disappeared into thin air. Thankfully, by the end of the clip it's clear Thanos hasn't returned to smite everyone. In a bit of self-aware humor, it looks like SNL cast member Pete Davidson was behind the deadly dusting attack, having bought the Infinity Gauntlet off of eBay while intoxicated. The skit not only contains meta jokes about Davidson's on-again, off-again appearances, but also cheekily tells long-running SNL cast member Kenan Thompson that it's okay to take a week off every now and then, something he acts as if he never heard of before.
Although it is a fairly dated reference by now, it's incredibly adorable to see Scarlett Johansson interacting with her her fiancé Colin Jost, and knowing Saturday Night Live is the place they met gives an extra twinge of cuteness to the admittedly silly sketch. While Johansson won't have to worry about Thanos' deadly finger snaps in the upcoming Black Widow film, fans are surely looking forward to the super-spy's first solo feature anyway.
