The mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke's backstory is apparently filled with endless battles and a need for revenge according to actor Andy Serkis. If Serkis's tight-lipped response on the villain's backstory is any indicator, there remains a rich history yet to be told for the villain. Whether Snoke's backstory will have any part to play in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker remains to be revealed.
Snoke was initially thought to be the Big Bad of the new trilogy, having seduced young Ben Solo, the child of intergalactic heroes Leia and Han, to the dark side. Although his past has remained somewhat vague in the films, recent Star Wars novelizations have delved deeper into Snoke's backstory. While Snoke was not a Sith Lord, the enigmatically evil leader of the First Order is old enough to have seen the rise and fall of the Empire from afar, and is a most powerful dark side user. Emperor Palpatine even sensed Snoke's power emanating from the Unknown Regions. Still, there remains much to learn about Snoke outside of what happens in films, and Serkis' comments suggest he has a backstory worth exploring.
In an interview with People (via Comicbook.com), Snoke actor Andy Serkis remained steadfast in refraining from revealing any Snoke spoilers, which may suggest some revelations about the character's past could play a part in The Rise of Skywalker. Speaking with People as part of their Star Wars: The Essential Guide to the Rise of Skywalker issue, Serkis said:
"I know what his backstory is but I don't want to reveal it... His traits are born out of injuries from battle and a deep sense of revenge."
Serkis has been noticeably tight-lipped on the subject of Snoke, adding in the interview that he "couldn't say anything at all" beyond the vaguely intriguing statement regarding the villain. Naturally, one thing Star Wars fans do best is speculate, and Serkis' comments have drawn endless theories and raised even more questions about the possibility of a role Snoke could play in The Rise of Skywalker. Returning director J.J Abrams has also kept his thoughts on Snoke's part in the final film fairly vague, neither confirming nor denying if Snoke will make a return in any sort of way.
Many fans were disappointed by Snoke's rather untimely death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. All of the buildup and mystery around the new character introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was deflated, leaving behind many unanswered questions and unresolved theories. This backstory Serkis speaks of, however, could shed some light on Snoke. For example, Snoke's weathered and battered visage may have come from wounds sustained in one of these battles, and perhaps Palpatine is a figure on who he wished revenge. There's even some evidence to suggest Snoke actually was Palpatine all along, in which case, a history of battles and revenge describe him quite nicely. There are a lot of questions still in need of answering once Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters in a few weeks time, and it's possible more information about Snoke's past is among the answers.
